Random Glider Question

Just curious what you ladies think would be better.  We live in a 1BR NYC apt so this chair will be in our living room.

 1) A glider armchair that reclines pretty far back ( the lever is hidden in the cushion, not on the side).  Glides and swivels in upright position, locks when reclined.

2) An armchair and matching ottoman that both glide.   The chair glides and swivels.

I know motion is key for a crying baby but I just don't know if it matters if my legs are up or not as I glide....

I really liked being able to put my legs up.. both my glider & ottoman rock.  Especially in the beginning as you would not know how long you might be "stuck" there ; ) or if baby fell asleep on us. Sometimes it is nice just to cuddle with baby.

Now that I have a toddler & a preschooler it is important to make sure we can lock these as well when not using, as they put their fingers everywhere!

  • I can't stand the gliding ottomans.  Maybe it's my utter lack of coordination, but I much prefer a stationary ottoman I can push off of.  Given that and your space concerns, I'd go with the glider armchair.  You'll probably be able to use it longer as a recliner, too.
  • I'd consider getting just the glider if space is a concern.  If the ottoman will fit, then perhaps get that too.

  • The glider might look "smaller" if you're considering spacing issues.  The fact that the glider also reclines pretty far back might be a bonus in case baby likes to  sleep on your chest.  For your other choice, I think that both a gliding armchair and a gliding ottoman make for accidents waiting to happen.  I actuallly brought a doll with me when I was trying out the chairs, it made it more realistic when I tried to get up and out of the chairs.  What a difference trying to get out of those chairs using only one or no hands - LOL!  good luck!

  • I agree about the space issues but if you have a c-section, it is really going to hurt to try to push up out of the chair. Because while the lever gets you back, you have to use your legs to push the chair back up. If you have a baby in your arms, it is also difficult to use your feet/legs as leverage to get it out of the way to get up. With an ottoman, you can easy bump it out of the way and get up. Just my experience!! If you can find a regular glider with a high back, it will still enable you to feel supported.
