Forgive me for the dumb question. I've been through this before, I've googled, and I'm still lost.
When someone says they're 1 cm dilated, 50% effaced, and -3 station...what does -3 station mean?
I have actually never heard that term until reading on the tri boards.
Re: pg related - what the heck does this mean?

Dilation--the cm open that the cervix is open. Goes to 10cm when baby is ready to come out
Effacement--The thickness of the cervix. Normally the cervix is thick and long. In order to be 10cm, the cervix thins out as it opens. They do it in %'s. Obviously 100% effaced means completely thinned out and ready to go (as long as your are 10cm)
Station--is the position of the baby's head. goes from -5 to +5, although, you'll typically only hear -3 to a +3. The negative numbers mean baby's head is still way up in the pelvis. 0 station means the head is engaged mid pelvis and the the number gets progressively higher as the head comes out.
Hope this helps!
Duh! Sorry, I see that you only wanted the "station" part answered!!!
I wasn't reading close enough!
WOW- that's a great explanation on a lot of things!
No worries. When the time comes, all I'll really need to know is what the goal is to get the baby out!
