Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Anyone else's 1 yr. old not walking?

DS is not even trying to walk on his own. DH and I will try to get him to walk from one of us to the other but he immediately flops down on his knees and crawls. It's like he has absolutely no interest in walking. Is there something else I can do to help him try walking? I think every single person that was at his party on Saturday wanted to know if he was walking yet... and they were all shocked that he's not even attempting it...

Re: Anyone else's 1 yr. old not walking?

  • DS was, but I know lots of kids that weren't walking until until after they were a year.  Two of them didn't even walk until they were 16 months old, and their pediatricians weren't worried.

  • DS isn't. He pulls up and sometimes lets go to stand on his own, but he doesn't have the balance yet. I'm not concerned or in a hurry for him to walk AT ALL. I like that he can't yet!

    ?

  • Not even close to doing it on his own.
  • DD walked at 10 months, but my mom said I was 15 months before I walked...pedi told her I was so big that I was probably afraid to fall...lol
  • Nope and I okay with it. I figure he will walk when he is ready, plus I feel like I get to keep him as my baby a while longer.

  • He will walk when ready! I felt the same way as you. DS was really big into cruising and happy to do it! He didn't even start walking until 15 months and now he doesn't stop and runs too!!
  • DS was starting to cruise at 12 months but didn't start walking until shortly after 15 months.

  • We get that question all the time also.  DS is not walking yet.  What we've done that's really helped is hold his hands and walk with him.  At first, he wouldn't let us let go of either hand.  Now he's doing it with us just holding one of his hand and we've noticed it's really helped with his balance.
  • Lexie walked at 9 months but my niece didn't crawl until she was one and then didn't walk until almost 16 months. Now she RUNS everywhere she is going.?

  • My BG isn't walking yet and is 14-1/2 months old. She has done all of her physical milestones on the later side (sitting, crawling, cruising), but once she gets them she is just as fast as the rest of the kids her age so I am not worried. I do get sick of the "is she even TRYING to walk yet?"... come on people, she will do it when she is ready!?
  • We are at 16 months today and still no steps or walking. I just figure he is going at his own pace.
  • DD was not crawling until after her first birthday and no signs of walking anytime soon.?
  • DD did not crawl until about 14 months (she scooted on tush before that) and did not walk until just before 17 months.  She runs now.  Don't worry.  The drs. start to worry at 18 months.  No big deal.  Oh and sometimes people don't know what to say so they say, this, not meaning to freak you out!

  • ds didnt crawl until 14 months and still isnt walking..
  • DD is almost 15 months and still not walking. I think we are finally getting close though over the last week or so. I didn't walk as a baby til i was 18 months, apple doesn't fall far from the tree ;-)

Ditto this!  I said when he was ten months old that I was in NO HURRY for him to walk.  It is so cute how he crawls around like crazy on our hardwood floors (::slap! slap! slap!::) and once this time is gone it will never be back!!

He does have little push toys that he walks around the house pushing everywhere, and he loves those.  Do you have something like that where he can stand up to push it to practice?  DS loves his and looks so proud of himself.  If you tell him to "walk like a big boy" he will go get his push toy, pull up on it, and take off.

  • DS didn't even take his first step until 15 months, and still isn't "walking" yet.  He can walk, but doesn't use it as his main means of getting somewhere.  He just started taking several unassisted steps a couple of weeks ago, and he's 17 months.

    No worries until 18 months!

Almost walking.  He took 10 steps between us yesterday but has not let go to walk on his own yet.  I think we're getting close though.

     Don't worrySmile

  • Penny just took her first step recently, and she doesn't seem very close to really walking yet.  She just prefers to crawl- or to walk holding onto our hands.  As soon as we take our hands away she sits down and shows no interest in continuing to walk.  I'm okay with it- I know she'll walk eventually.  Right now I'm more interested in her having more than 2 teeth!

  • My DS isn't walking yet, but he does pull up and cruise on furniture.  He will also walk holding our hands.  My DS has hit all of his milestones, but on the later side.  I figure if he is walking by fall I will be pleased.  As far as encouraging him to walk - I think encouraging him to cruise and walk holding your hands should do the trip.  I think they just need to practice and build up confidence.

My 16 and a half month old is not walking yet and I am really pissed.  This is not what I ordered.  I'm trying to get my money back, but the manufacturer says the warranty is expired and I'm stuck with her.
  • 18 months is the age at which your pedi. might recommend an evaluation if your DS is still not walking. until then, try not to sweat it, every child is different. personally, i didn't walk until i was 17 months and i experienced no other "delays" of any kind.?
  • Not walking unless you hold her hands.

    Not talking, just babbling.

I am super-duper fed up with everyone who keeps asking "how come she is not talking/walking/sleeping?" Seriously, I want to cut my wrists if I hear it one more...

  • T has taken a few steps and loves to push her Wheely Bug and other push toys all over, but walking by herself?  Nope.  No big deal.  She'll walk holding our hands and just started using one hand to hold on, but I'm not going to rush her at all.  :)

What really gets under my skin is the constant comparison with a little girl that is a week older than her at daycare.  She's moving to the Toddler room and the director and assistant director keep making comments about it.  I'm getting to the point that I want to say "She may be walking, but she's on four bottles a day, mostly baby food and doesn't speak at all.  I think my bottle-weaned, all table-food-fed, happily babbling and signing daughter is JUST FINE."  :)

  • DS took his first steps 2 days before he turned 14 months. He still only takes a few steps now and then. He likes to walk when you're holding his hands. I know he'll walk more when he's ready.

  • DD didn't walk until she was 14mos old. Now, she is running all over the place. It will happen.
