Can you re-use carseats?

This is probably a dumb question, but can you re-use carseats?  If I wanted to use Anna's infant seat for #2, but we're not planning on TTC for another few years, would the carseat still be useable or would we need a newer model? 

My sister plans on TTC next year - could we give the seat to her? 

What are the guidelines with carseat usage?  I never really paid attention since her carseat was new.

    Since people sell carseats in consignment stores, I don't see why you can't reuse it. I plan to.

    The plastic they are made from has an expiration date.  I think it is 5 years.  I would be ok with using a car seat from someone I knew, that I was 110% sure had never been in an accident and was less than 5 years old.  However, I would never buy one off of ebay or craigslist.

    we plan on reusing ours.  We haven't been in any accidents and I doubt it will be obsolete any time soon.

    I thought I read somewhere the shelf life was 5 years.

    They have expiration dates on the bottom so as long as you are within that it would be fine!  I would never buy one used because you don't know if it has been in an accident but since it is yours that is fine!

    Exactly this. I used an infant car seat from a friend because we never drive. We used it a total of four times and it doesn't expire for two more years. They have never been in any accidents with it and it's in perfect condition.

    As long as it's not expired. DS is using DD's old seat now.

    I'm planning on using my infant seat again cause it will be less than 5 years.  I'm also going to be using 2 convertible seats from my brother that my nephew used.  They are pretty new (within 2 years) and I know they weren't in any accidents.
