Clicky Poll...Childbirth Classes

Re: Clicky Poll...Childbirth Classes

  • I said yes, but it sounds like you're talking about hospital classes.  We took Bradley so I think there is a huge difference sometimes. I found ours extremely helpful.

  • FWIW - Our ins. reimbursed us for our classes. May be worth checking into.

Ditto. Not having to pay made it much more "worth it" than it would have been otherwise.

  • We took Bradley classes, and learned a lot. I think it prepared me and DH to go through the process naturally. However, I do not care for our instructor at all, thats the only thing I disliked about the classes.

  • I'm doing hypnobirthing classes & so far I'd say they're definitely worth the money.

As far as hospital classes, our insurance is covering it & I haven't gone yet, so I really can't say.

  • Ours was hospital classes...it included childbirth, newborn care, and breastfeeding basics.  I really liked our teacher, but she didn't give straight answers to a lot of questions.

I know it's hard to say black or white regarding deliveries and such, but I felt like I got better answers from just bumping or googling it myself....or regarding newborn care (I met with our pediatrican back in April and learned more from her in the 20 minutes we met)

  • We just did a 6 hour class on one Saturday.  There was a lot of information that I already had just from reading and lurking around here, but there was also stuff that I hadn't thought about or had even forgotten.  I was most pleased about the experience because it gave DH a chance to hear information from someone that was not me.  Because of work schedules he doesn't have a lot of time to do his own reading/research and we just don't have a lot of time to catch up on things.
  • I agree with you about doing my own research and finding out what I felt has prepared me & kept me sane thus far. However, I'm glad we went because DH was pretty much clueless and he even said he's glad we spent the money on them & that he felt they were well worth it for all he learned.
  • I didn't bother with the classes.  I got a DVD of a childbirth class, and just watched that.  I found it fairly informative, but I wouldn't have if I had spent the money of the class ($140) vs the money of the video ($20).  I don't think what I learned was worth more than the 20 bucks.  I can still do a hospital tour without taking a class, and it's free.
  • My DH is kinda lazy about doing his own research so I'm glad we went.  There were other men around for him to relate to, and I know he learned a thing or two - especially how to comfort me when I go into labor.
  • DH learn a lot in the class but I think I could have taught it.  Most of the couples in my class had very basic questions I'm sure they have never used the internet or read a book.  I was disapointed in the amount of time spent on interventions vs the time spent on learning how to relax and prepare.  At least DH understands my birthplan now that he knows what the differnt prodecures are.

  • Even though our class ended up being reimbursed by insurance I would have been happy to pay for it. It was held by one of the nurses who works at the birthing center we're going to deliver at and the really interesting information I learned was about specific practices they use there. It made me a lot less stressed about having to slave over a birth plan since a lot of the things I'd be interested are standard, such as letting the cord finish pulsing, rooming newborns with mom 24/7, tub deliveries, etc. etc. It was also nice to get hand's on practice for breathing, massages DH can do and instructions for knowing when to call and how to manage early labor at home. All in all, it was about 75% informative and 25% fluff and worth the money.

  • We took an "express" class that was about 6 hour 1 Sunday I think it was $60.

I thought that was a much better route than doing several weekly classes!  We definately felt more prepared afterwards!

  • We don't have to pay for our childbirth classes, they are offered for free from the hospital, along with a multitude of other classes...so we're taking the childbirth and breastfeeding classes.
