I joined this. Most of the questions are pretty stupid and annoying but every now and then I do respond to posts. Most of the moms are British and no offense to our friends across the pond, but they seem to get some fairly wackadoo advice over there. One woman posted that her 14-month-old has never crawled but that he is mobile; he scoots on his butt as many babies do. She said he seems close to walking.
The nurse in her pedi's office told her she should FORCE her child to crawl because if he never learns to crawl he'll never gain hand-eye coordination and will not be able to read or write.
Whattheholyfuck?
I was like, yeah, you need to tell your pedi that his nurse is a moron.
Re: Circle of Moms on FB
I'm no expert, and I don't have any kids of my own...
But that seems awfully silly to me.?
There are people that believe that, my aunt being one of them. It's this system called Brain Gym, that focuses on a child's balance, hand-eye coordination, and things along that line. The thought is that the crawling phase is very important in their development and if they go straight to walking, they are going to have issues later on as school children, with focus and attention. I couldn't tell you exactly why though. I think I have the book half read somewhere.
We do the brain gym in my school and it is amazing how many younger kids cannot balance or successfully cross their arms back and forth. These are the kids that struggle with school work and behavior. Not sure if this has to do with their crawling or not crawling though.
All of the reading I've done tells me that crawling is really unnecessary; it's mobility that is the real milestone. The child should be able to figure out how to get from point A to point B on his own. Some crawl. Others scoot on their butt or pull themselves up early or figure out another way, but all of that requires hand-eye coordination and brain activity. I just find it hard to believe that if your kid decides to stand up and walk without crawling that he's not going to be able to read later on.
True. I think that as long as the baby is exploring and finding a way to get around, that's what matters. I wasn't trying to prove you wrong or anything.. Just wanted to let you know that there are a bunch of people out there that believe this. I haven't even read the whole book!
I never crawled. I scooted a bit and went straight to walking.
I could read at 3, read at a highschool level in 5-6th grade, aced AP math, graduated with honors, etc. It doesn't seem to have been an issue for me!
