Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Does anyone use Benadryl for allergies on a regular basis?

Because DS is having some really wicked allergies right now. (We're talking hives, runny nose, sneezing, red and watery eyes.) We calculated the correct dose so that he could at least sleep comfortably tonight, but I'm worried the allergies might get worse. I'll be calling pedi in the morning, but I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with toddlers and seasonal allergies?

Re: Does anyone use Benadryl for allergies on a regular basis?

  • Pedi said that I could give it to DD. I couldn't remember if she told me 1/2 tsp or 1/4 tsp so I give her 1/4 tsp and it stops the runny nose and lets her sleep. I'll be asking pedi again for the dosage when we see her next. Hope your DS feels better soon!

  • We use it often for runny nose.  If we don't her ears get nasty, too.

  • We used to do Zyrtec.?
  • I've tried it with both of my girls but found that Zyrtec worked better for both of them.  I know when I take Benedryl I feel drunk and it's not a good drunk. ;(  I'm sure your Pedi will want you to start with that though.
  • My pedi has prescribed it for DS daily...1/2 tsp
  • DD's pedi suggested using Claritin instead of Benadryl.  It seems to really help her.

We use 1/2 tsp everynight before bed.  DD is roughly 24lbs.

  • Our pedi said to give Benadryl for his allergies.  3/4 tsp.  I asked about Zyrtek and he said not until he is 2.

  • I just emailed DD's pedi about this the other day.  We were using bedadryl, but I wanted to see if there was something that wouldn't make her so sleepy.   She said 1/2 tsp of Zyrtec once a day.
  • We were also told to use Zyrtec daily.
  • not regularly, but pedi did tell us we can give dd benedryl when we need to.
  • I am hoping you'll reply to this...

when a young child has allergies, can they get a fever, not a high one, a 100.9 fever? We were at my mothers this weekend and she has a SUPER dusy house and DS started having loose stools, a runny nose (clear and ver slight) and a low fever. I am hoping that it's allergies and not a cold/virus.

  • SweetMonkey, you should probably call your pedi on that one. DS has had a fever off and on, but I thinks it's due to teething and not allergies.
