How affectionate is DC?

We just left DS with my mom overnight for the first time and when we came to pick him up he just kinda crawled off in a random direction. My mom says that they get more affectionate and huggy later on. DS never really reacts when we leave or come back unless he's left with someone he doesn't know well. He only cuddles when he's super tired and gives "kisses" when he's in a really really good mood. He's always been independent. He prefers to play by himself and can do so for like a half hour before he starts trying to get my attention. I'm a SAHM so I always thought that he wasn't very affectionate toward me b/c he sees me all day. He makes eye contact a lot and he smiles at people. He also has been getting crazy stranger anxiety with ppl he hasn't seen before talking to him. Is it really too early for him to be affectionate or should I just get ready for a non-hugger?

  • DS is becoming very cuddly, but he wasn't always.  He would do the same thing you mentioned (not reacting when we would come and go) but now he is totally different.  I teach and am home for the summer, but it used to seem like DS was mad at me when I would come home from work.  He would look at me and then look away, like "thanks for leaving me home with dad all day." It definately does change.  DS is super excited when anyone comes in the door now and he loves to cuddle and hug.   He still only kisses when he really wants to.

  • Joseph has been very cuddlesome from the beginning. He got a little independent around 12m, but now he's more actively affectionate, rubbing your arm, hugging, giving kisses, laying his head on your shoulder and saying "Ahhh!"
  • When we are playing, she always walks over and jumps into my lap to give me a hug. She loves giving hugs and cuddling now. I absolutely love it. She went through a stage where she wasn't for a while, and I missed it a lot. She loves to wave at random people and clap and reach out to touch their hands and say, "HihihihiHI!" She's just really social, I guess.
  • DD is the furthest thing from snuggly! She is super extroverted, engaging, waves and "talks" to everyone and anyone. When DH or I arrive she always rushes right over but not for a hug or kiss--more to "check in", ask to be picked up or walked around, but squirms immediately and is off to the next thing. I have only gotten one or two real hugs, usually when she's tired, and she'll kiss when it's a game...

  • I think every child is different. DS has always been a hugger since a very early age -like many, many times per day. While he hugs, he says "aaww." He hugs me all the time, he hugs his stuffed animals, sometimes he'll even hug his sippy. He gets it from DH though. He is a big "bear hugger" and overall, very affectionate. My girlfriends all say he's their favorite hugger. lol I know other LO's who are not that affectionate yet though.  Smiling at ppl on the other hand, takes a while for DS. He is usually serious w/ strangers at first. Sometimes I wish he would smile more b/c at home or with friends he is always so happy and smiley! See, they're all different!
