NTR: Do you think I'm being scammed?

I'm selling my sofa on craigslist and I think someone is trying to scam me.  I have it on for $399/bo.  I just got the following e-mail after telling this guy to make a bid when he inquired on its availability:

"Hi there,

Thanks for the prompt response and i will love to make an instant
purchase, so please do withdraw the advert from Craigslist, i don't
mind adding an extra $50.00 for you to take the advert down from
craigslist so that i can be rest assured that am in hand of the item.
I will also like you to know that i will be paying via check, and it
will be over night payment due to the distance. You don't need to
bother yourself with the shipment ok,i will do take care of that. So i
will need you to provide me with the following information to
facilitate the mailing of the check.

1. Your  full name
2. Your mailing address be it residential only
3. Your Mobile Phone Number.

Once again, I will like you to know that you will not be responsible
for shipping...i will have my mover come over as soon as you have
cashed the check.

Thanks"

Something about this make me really uncomfortable. Why would I accept a personal check?  What do you think?

  • SCAM!! Same thing happened to me. They will then tell you that they "accidentally" made the check out for more than it was supposed to be. They'll ask you to cash the check (which, when the bank figures out it is a bad check YOU will be responsible to pay back the money) and return them the excess amount- but keep a little extra "for your troubles."

There are tons of people who do this. I didn't fall for it, but reported it to craigslist and my local police who said it happens of all the time. This was about a year ago. Since then, I have sold other items on craigslist and have received similar emails. Now I always reply something like- Scam! I am reporting you to the police (even though I don't bother anymore).

  • I am shocked that you would even ask!

    YES - SCAM.

  • As the others have said, it's a scam. Report it.
  • Uh, yes. Scam.

  • Scam with a capital S.

My neighbor recieved almost the exact same email, word for word, and was scammed w/ a Craigslist transaction. She was pissed, and scared for awhile. DO NOT give out any info to this person.

  • Scam!  Same thing happened to DH over tickets via Craigslist.
  • I was pretty sure, but wanted to make sure I wasn't being overly cautious.  Another thing about that is weird is just that anyone would want my couch that bad. lol.  I think I'll see it to the college kid offering $275. Thanks Ladies.

  • I am selling a stroller on craigslist and received a very similar email today.

  • Is he by any chance the former Minister of the Interior of Nigeria?
  • This same exact scam was in my local paper this morning.

HE-LARIOUS!  A few months ago I got an email from the son of the former Prime Minister of Nigeria wanting my $100 Kodak digital camera shipped to Africa... crazy!  Nice try buddy.

  • without a doubt this is a scam.
  • I agree with everyone that it's really fishy.

I'm just curious how it would even work for the person though.  You give your name and number.  But if you don't turn over the couch until after they send you a check AND it clears, how do they win?  The bank has to clear the check and that would take time- if it wasn't a real check, wouldn't they figure it out?    I mean, I can't believe anyone would turn over the item (couch or whatever) until after the check clears.  Is that the scam- are there people who would turn the couch over before it clears?   Maybe I just assume no one would be that dumb!   Or am I missing the entire thing and it's stealing the identity of the person though their address and phone number?
