Parenting after a Loss

DD got her first bottle today

We went out to dinner for Father's Day and I wasn't sure how to handle it if she woke up while we were out. So I brought my manual pump with me and went to the ladies room when she started to stir. I got 1.5oz in a few minutes. By the time I got back to the table, she had quieted herself and gone back to sleep, so we didn't feed her then. When we got home, she woke up.

I asked DH if he wanted to try giving her the bottle. He did and she took to it like a champ! Of course, 1.5oz was not enough for my little guzzler, so I still got to nurse her for a few minutes afterwards. I'm glad to know she'll take a bottle, but a little sad for this milestone of firsts.

  • I bet feeding her from the bottle was a great father's day thing for your dh to do through. And good she'll take a bottle. Bailey's had a few since he was so big we had to supplement a few times before my milk came in. It's good to know they'll take it so once daycare starts we don't have to worry about them eating.

It was! I think he liked feeling more involved with feeding. He always feels so helpless when she fusses cuz he can't do anything to help her when she's hungry. He even asked me, "why don't you just always pump and bottle feed her?" I didn't really answer him...

  • That is great she took a bottle! Your dh must have loved feeding her.
  • Aww glad he was able to feed her her first bottle :)
  • This is a good thing.  I know many moms who wait to start on the bottle because they've heard it's better and then have a baby who won't take one!!

I agree! I've been reading "The Nursing Mother's Companion" and it actually suggests introducing a bottle by the end of the first month so they get used to it. So we were planning to try her with one in the next couple of weeks anyway. I just thought it'd be special for DH on Father's Day.

  • Aw, that's great!  I like pumping & giving bottles b/c DH can give him one too...nice to have the help!
