I love this name. It's pretty, it's unique and it's German(which we both are). My husband thinks she'll get 'pee' teasing Petra-pee. I think that's stupid. I don't think we'll be using it but, what do you think?
I knew someone named Petra and she pronounced it Pee-tra. However, most people assumed it was pronounced Pet-rah and mispronounced it. I like the name. But, my last name is very frequently mispronounced and it's frustrating. Given this, I wouldn't name my child a name that would likely be mispronounced.
I would say Pet-ra, as in the city in Jordan. It is nms at all.
This. The traditional pronunciation is 'Pet-rah' and not 'Pee-trah'. It is actually a Greek word/name in origin, meaning rock or stone.
This.
I had a dog named Petra because I rock climb and I love the way it sounds. But unless you're Greek/Middle Eastern, I don't know that you can pull it off.

I actually love the name. I used to read the Ballet Shoes books as a kid by Noel Streatfield and one of the girls was named Petra. But it is pronounced Petra in the book (and movie version.) I don't like it pronounced Peetra and I think that would lead to pee teasing.
I've never known that name to be pronounced Pee-tra, only Pet-tra. I used it in high school German, and it was Pet-tra. If you avoid the "pee" pronunciation, you should have no problems avoiding the "pee" nicknames.

Actually, if you want it to sound German, it should be pronounced pay-tra (with a good, gutteral, German "r" sound). My family is German and I speak fluent German. My mom also has a (German) friend with this name. I like it, except it constantly gets mispronounced. There is also an old Christian 80's hard rock band named Petra (but pronounced pet-ra).
We named our two dogs Petra and Jordan. My husband traveled there and loved it. I thought the names were nice and I liked how they had meaning to them...not your everyday Sparky or Max name. The location is beautiful, where they filmed some scenes from "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade'
I love this name. This was one of out top picks until we found out we needed boy names. There is a way to make fun of any name. Go for it- its different and exotic for the US... but she will stand out!!
Re: Petra?
Is it pronounced Pee-tra or Pe-tra (like pet)?
Either way, it's nms. The first thing that came to mind was petri dish. Sorry!
Yes it is pronounced Pee-tra. But Peter is Pee-ter, right. thnx

I know a Swedish Petra and she pronounces it Pet-ra, like Pet.
(Not Pee-tra.)
That's what I thought of too.
This. If you are going to use it, it's PET-ra, like the city carved in stone. I actually kind of like it but wouldn't use it.
Ditto?
