What do you use for time out?

Chair, Step, Anything?

I usually put my daughter on a stair step, but when I am in the kitchen I can't see her.  I was think of getting a chair or a stool of some sort.  I think I found something usable of CL.

Re: What do you use for time out?

  • What about a mat or even just a placemat that can go on the floor?
  • Loading the player...
  • We use a chair and make him face the wall, even though he usually turns around and tries to talk to us.  I swear time outs are the longest 2 minutes ever!
  • I have a mat that says time out spot and I put it in the corner of our living room
  • We use his room. We do 1-2-3 Magic so we don't go with the theory of it needing to be a place with no stimulation/toys, etc. It works well for us. If we are in public he either goes in his stroller, or I pick him up and carry him outisde of wherever we are.

Can you explain how this works?  Thx.

a very basic explanation - he exhibits anything that we consider "stop behavior" (a tantrum, etc.) and we say "that's 1". Give him 10 seconds then  "that's 2". 10 more seconds and then "that's 3, let's take 5" and I put him in hsi room for timeout (timeouts are 2 minutes at his current age). Once the timeout is over he gets out (ort if he is playing in his room at that point he can stay there as long as he wants, whichever).

The main difference between 1-2-3 Magic and other timeout methods is that there is no discussion. No "do you know why I put you in timeout" or having him apologize and hug after it is done, etc. Once timeout is done the issue is behind us, zero discussion (I obviously will explain why he he being counted if it is something new, for example "that's 1 - we don't do XYZ", etc)

There is also a whole philosophy with it of "start behaviors" - encouraging behaviors you want them to do. It's a good book and is working well for us. Very simple and consistent.

     What a lousy Christmas gift:)

  • Nothing. I want to be able to do it anywhere without having any sort of chair/mat/stool and I worry that having something like that would mean that no time-out chair = no time out to a toddler.

In the house, I put her sitting on the floor facing a closet door (I'd put her in a corner but we don't really have any corners).  But she's done timeout just sitting in the grass at the park.

  • I just find a designated "spot" for her and tell her she needs to take a time out.  Like a previous poster mentioned, I want to be able to use time out if we are out in public.  I need to have a spot that isn't a specific chair, step, etc..For example, yesterday she was in time out at my sister's bridal shower for licking my sister after we told her to stop.  I put her on one of the basement steps and she sat there for 1 min. until it was time to get up.  At home, she sometimes faces the wall or sometimes goes in her room.  It depends where we are at the time.
