I need the thoughts of women about...

Re: I need the thoughts of women about...

  • I would love SO much to do it, but we can't afford it :( I hope in the coming years it will become more mainstream and cheaper to be able to do. I have heard really good things about it.

We looked into donating it, hoping it would help someone else, but it was even a bit expensive to do that because you have to pay to courier it to the bank and make all the arrangements yourself (at least, that is how it is here in Ontario).

  • If we could afford it, I would probably do it but we can't

We are donating, as long as I give birth during business hours...hehe. The donor service at our hospital is only available from 8-5 M-F, so crazy.

  • Again, we can't afford it either. :(
  • We would love to bank, but it's too expensive right now.  If I was able to continue working through this pregnancy we would have....but we are a little behindEmbarrassed

We will donate if able to.

  • No banking or donating for us.  It's more important to me that our baby gets that blood and oxygen back right after birth and we delay cutting the cord for a few minutes so that happens.

  • This is what I am wondering about, what the drawbacks and expected altercations might be. What do you mean by delay cutting the cord?
  • I too, want to wait until the cord is through pumping to cut it.

If you cut the cord right away (while it's still pulsing) there is nutrient rich oxygen and blood IN the cord still (ie: what you donate or bank if you're doing that) that is really good for your newborn baby to have and they won't ever get.

If you wait a few minutes for it to stop, it goes back in to your baby and they receive their blood and oxygen that was in the cord.  It's really, really good for them and considering many professionals view cord blood banking as a pointless, expensive scam (not saying I do, just that this is a common view out there) this is a really good way for baby to receive the good parts of their cord blood without going through all of that.

  • After doing our research, we decided it wouldn't be worth it for us unless we had a history of those specific diseases in our families--which we don't.

ETA: we will also delay cord cutting.

  • I would like to, but the cost.  I'm planning on asking my doc if the hospital participates in donating it.
