hearing worse? (long!!)

Hi,

Ok, so my 21 month old son has been diagnosed with a mild to moderate hearing loss in both ears.  He never passed the newborn hearing test, got the ABR done at 1 month and 4 months, both with the same results.

Now we are noticing he doesn't respond to sound, with or without his hearing aids in, so we took him to his audiologist, and she put him in the sound booth and he tested just fine for his degree of loss.  I wasn't really impressed with the test though, I think he knows what she is doing and just looks at the stuffed animals at the right time.  We have early intervention and our case worker (I'm not sure what to call her)  was seeing what we see with not responding to sound so she had us go to her audiologist.

He might have responded to 70 db...but it couldn't be confirmed.  This test I felt better about because their were two audiologists doing the test, one in with us, one outside.  They could tell when he was just looking around and when he was looking for sound.

Now we are trying to figure out a way to get him another ABR (another long story, but in short we don't have insurance for his hearing loss)

So after all that...

My question, has anyone heard of kids hearing getting worse?  Significantly worse?

We are thinking it either got worse, or for some reason he is not interested in listening to sound at all.

Sorry this is so long, I think I needed to vent a little too!

i work with deaf and hearing impaired children and to answer your question yes hearing can get worse.

  • Is it somewhat common in the hard of hearing community?  I guess I have never heard of it so it worries me a little.
  • I work with deaf and hard of hearing children and yes their hearing can get worse. If he has a progressive loss then that can happen. THat means over time his hear will decrese. However maybe he is just ignoring the sounds I have seen this happen too. Good luck

  • Hi, I have a two yr old with a similar loss. Hearing can get worse over time, which is why they do the booth tests and other testing on a reg. basis. (For many kids the loss will stay the same)  My son had a higher frequency get a little worse, but then it has leveled off again for the past yr. I will bring up a few points. First, always listen to your intuition, which you did by getting him tested. Secondly, his age could have everything to do with the results or him ignoring you. Sometimes you have to wait until they participate in the booth better. Third, when his results were different, they booth tested him every 4 weeks to see if the results were consistant. The more they are consistant, the greater likelihood that it is somewhat accurate. That being said, if you do not have insurance many states will pay for hearing services up to age 3 in which they enter into the services of the public school system. Check with your state.

If his loss were to worsen, they can always adjust his aids. Does he go to speech therapy?

  • Thank you for your reply.  We are looking into getting him another ABR, where we were going that was state funded and we didn't pay anything just got that taken away (from what I understand)  and so now we are 100% pay.  Its hard, with his regular audiologist he did just fine in her booth, but everywhere else he doesn't seem to hear.  Which is why we went to the other audiologist.

We do go to speech therapy, they are concerned like I am, she is saying he is presenting as a child with a more severe hearing loss.

The waiting is so hard!  I just want to know how to help him!!!
