What and how many of what do you put in a diaper bag?
I'm going to pack bags (diaper and hospital) and install carseats this weekend and I'm kind of at a loss of what to put in the diaper bags. I mean, I know I need diapers, but how many? And then I guess I need one of those travel wipes thingies and some wipes.
But what else?
Re: Dumb dumb dumb question inside.
The hospital should have diapers for you - so you don't need a whole lot.
My diaper bag has the following:
A couple of pacifiers (I am not concerned with nipple confusion)
2-4 diapers in 2 sizes, as we don't know how big the baby will be
Travel wipes
A couple of outfits
But I think that's about it....
Oh yes a toy. Good thinking!
See, this is why I come here. ;o)
You shouldn't need to bring anything for baby except what you'd like him/her to wear going home.?
My nephew was born Sunday and their hospital provided diapers, wipes (well, they were dry, napkin-like and you got them wet with warm water), blankets, burp clothes, pacifiers (if you wanted to use one), and the hospital baby clothes and hat. The only thing they used for their son from home was his going-home outfit. ?
You could bring mittens if you want to, in case they scratch themselves, and a baby nail file (NOT clippers). If you'd prefer to have him/her wear clothes from home, I would not bring onesies because of how often they get checked out by nurses/doctors.. it would become a PITA to have to unsnap it everytime the cord stump needs to be checked, etc.... not to mention, the stuff the put on the stump to help dry it out stains, so you don't want to ruin any good clothes from home. You could bring your own blankets if you want, but again, you shouldn't need to. ?
The O'Baby Blog
I didn't take one for DD to the hospital, and won't for the twins, either.
But in general, this was in my diaper bag before leaving the house:
-3 diapers, a spray bottle, 4-5 wash cloths, a bag to put the dirty diaper in (CD), a roll-up mat to change her on.
-hooter hider
-2 changes of clothes and about 8,000,000 socks
-purell
-sling
-a spitrag
-bottle of water for me
Each hospital provides different things, so check with your hospital. Mine provided: clothes/blankets, diapers, wipes, and vaseline.
My diaper bag will have: a couple of sleepers, a swaddling blanket (or 2), diapers (I'm thinking 4) and wipes (we live out of town), bum bum balm, Kolic or Oval (especially if you have to have antibiotics during labor - baby could be gassy), pacifiers, and a nursing cover.
For DS's newborn diaper bag, I packed waaaay too much crap and never used any of it. I had (for a trip to the grocery) 5-6 diapers, wipes, changing pad, hand-wipes, hand-gel, travel sized diaper cream and lotions, 2-3 pacis, an extra outfit, 2-3 rattles/toys, 1-2 bibs, 2-3 burp clothes, baggies for dirty clothes/diapers, 2 extra bottles/bottle of water/formula, 1-2 receiving blankets, who knows what. I think I even had safety pins and a first aid kit (for what??). I could barely lift the bag.
In reality, what I needed: 1-2 diapers/wipes/baggies, a receiving blanket or changing pad, hand-gel, an extra paci, a burp cloth, and maybe an extra outfit (only bc/ I believe that the one time I don't have it will be the one time he barfs/has a blow-out everywhere). For a longer outing, maybe a couple extra diapers and a bottle or two (if needed).
ETA- I'm talking about what I had in his everyday diaper bag, not what I brought to the hospital. I didn't bring anything for him to the hospital other than clothes to wear home (and the carseat, of course).
What you have in the diaper bag depends on where you are going and how long you will be gone.
For the hospital only - I would say maybe two diapers, a travel container of wipes, the plastic changing pad (if you have one), formula & a bottle (if you aren't bf), pacifier, a onsie (just in case), a burp cloth....
When LO gets older/trips get longer you tend to put in more stuff, like a toy, tylenol, etc.
HTH!
