HELP!!!! Without swaddle=never sleep again!!

HHHHEEELLLLLPPPP!!!!

DD is all about rolling over now. Shortly after I put her down I found her (swaddled) face down. I freaked out...scariest mommy moment EVER! So I put her in a sleep sack with the velcro swaddle part across her chest/arms out. She freaked out. She was rolling back and forth in the crib crying and flailing her arms about. She hit her head on the slats of the crib. DH had to run out at 9:15 to get a breathable bumper b/c I worried she would sufficate. Well.....At 11 she was still hysterical over this process. No matter how much I stood over her shusshing and patting her back she was not going to sleep. I swaddled her arms in and by the time the velcro hit the sack she was OUT! I can't continue to swaddle her b/c I literally was up ALL night watching her. At 6:15 a.m. she rolled over face planted, and managed to turn her head only a little bit to breathe. I can't sleep worrying she might suffocate. HOW DO I GET HER USED TO NO SWADDLE???? Will it just take some fussy nights?

  • it's just going to take a few fussy nights. It'll be OK, I promise.

  • I was convinced DD#1 would never sleep unswaddled but she did! It just took about three nights and she figured it out. I wish DD#2 would sleep swaddled, she hates it and sleeps craptastically because of it!
  • Does she nap with one?

Yeah, she naps with it. It has been such a lifesaver for getting long stretches of sleep for the past 4 1/2 months, but now I feel like I regret having started.

  • DD is in a swaddle only at bedtime.  She has napped since about 3 weeks without one.  We are in the process of weaning her off of it.  We have been doing it gradually though.  Tried one time cold turkey and had a horrible night because of it and put her in it that night around 4 am!!  So we started gradually by only leaving one arm out for about a week.  We currently have both arms out.  Once she is STTN well like that, we will start gradually loosening the swaddle until it is a loose as a sleep sack.  So far gradualy seems to be going well.  BTW, some people wonder why we're weaning her off of it so soon.  It is because she is outgrowing all of her swaddles as she is in the 95th percentile for length!!

  • our daughter was the same way. we had to stop swaddling b/c of rolling over. we ended up letting her cry it out. it sucked at the time, but it worked and she became a great sleeper w/o having to swaddle.
