Two Under 2

anyone NOT getting a double stroller right away?

We have decided to not get one until we decide that we really really need it.

I have both a moby and a sling to use for the lil man, and I am planning on using those alot.

DH says that when we go to the mall (or somewhere as a family) Rylee can be in the umbrella stroller (if Kai is in the Chicco)...

I also figure that when I do actually go out with two kids under 18 months, it will probably be trips to Target/Meijer and then I can keep Kai in his carseat and put him in the basket, and Rylee in the front part of the cart...

Just wondering if this is insane thinking or not... :)

Re: anyone NOT getting a double stroller right away?

  • We didn't get one until last week.  I didn't think we'd need one either since I have a Moby and a Bjorn.  I think if you don't go to the mall or anything, you might be alright.  I had a problem because I needed to go shopping for a dress for my sister in law's wedding, and there's no way to try on clothes with a baby in a wrap!  Plus I think it's a HUGE pain if you need to go to the bathroom and the baby is in the sling...maybe I'm just not that good at it, though.  I'm MUCH happier now that we have the stroller.

  • Not insane thinking at all. I went to the mall last week, put both girls in the double stroller and wore DS in the Baby K'Tan (if find this easier to put on than the Moby - same concept).

You may change your mind about your needs in a few months after #2 gets here.

  • I'm not planning on getting one right away either; however, I'm sure there will be one in my future.

  • We're going the same route.  If we decide we need one, we'll get one but I don't have any plans to do so before the baby is born.  DD#1 will rarely sit in a stroller on a good day.

ditto this. I have an ergo and used it ALL THE TIME before I got too pregnant. I plan to use it again as much as I can. I rarely go to the mall anyway. Most of my trips are quick ones to Target or the grocery store and the cart will work fine.?

  • We go for a lot of walks, so I know I will use it a lot.  We have it now but won't be using it for several months because I plan to do what you said: moby/bjorn with a single stroller.

Mine are 1 and 2, and we're not planning on getting a double stroller until #3 arrives. We also have a Chicco and an umbrella stroller, and that what we use for trips around the mall. In places like "Target and the grocery store, I just use the carts where two kids can sit and you have the whole cart free (which I'll put this baby in the front part in it's infant seat). I think it's been more convenient; we can separate the kids if necessary since they're in different strollers, and it's our "man-on-man" defense approach
  • i don't think its insane, but for me, it would not work. my son wakes up everytime he comes out of his carseat (he will nap for hours if i leave him be) and then he typically wants to be fed. if i took him out everytime we went somewhere to stick him in the sling, i would have to nurse him before we could go anywhere! i find the double stroller very convenient as i can just keep him in his infant seat and go. whatever works for you is the right answer, though. :-)
  • We got a double stroller at our second shower (surprised by my church friends), so we had it right away. #2 was born in Nov. and we live in WI so I wouldn't have really needed for the first six months. Now that it is warm, I couldn't deal without it. We go for lots of walks and #2 is almost 20 lbs, so way too heavy for my back to carry him in a front carrier and I haven't found a sling I like for a heavy baby.

  • I didn't buy one for awhile.  I ended up borrowing my SILs to try it out first and I really liked having one for trips to the mall/park alone.
  • This is our plan as well.  Either DS in the stroller or front of cart with new baby in the sling, or (in resturants or whatever), new baby in the stroller and DS in the high chair.  For walks, DS will go in the stroller and new baby will go in the sling.

We'll probably end up getting one, but I just don't know what DS will be like as a 16+ month old (he changes so much every day!), and we don't know what our needs will be.

For that matter, we are hardly buying ANYTHING for the first few months.  The baby will sleep in the PNP until we decide if we need a toddler bed or regular bed for DS or an extra crib or whatever.  And so on.

  • we waited until ds was 9 m/o.  I walked the dog at a park every day... ds in either the hotsling or bjorn and dd in the single jogger... then at the mall we'd either do the same but with the peg perego... or I would snap ds' infant seat into the peg (or when he was a little older sit him directly in the peg) and dd would walk... I could hipsling her with the hotsling if she got unruly... but that was rare.  and usually it was b/c she was tired.  dd enjoyed pushing ds in the stroller... so I would just have her help... most of our trips were our daily walks at the park, and trips to the library, mall (indoor play area for dd), bookstores, target or the grocery store (which Target and the grocery store had two seaters).
  • I just got one last week--it is more so we can go for walks around the neighborhood...also my DD 1 can't be trusted in the front of the store carriage and if you put the baby seat in the front part there is really no room for what you are needing to purchase...
  • I didn't get mine until #2 was here. Well, I got a huge double jogger to work out, but I was hoping that would be it. Once he was, I realized I really wanted something to take them out in, and I got one that worked (okay, two) with the carseat.
