Night 3 of "no more binkies"

I have to say I really thought it would be worse than this.  Let me recap for you.

DH had been talking to DD about giving up her binkies and how she was getting to be too big for them. He decided that he wanted this to be *his thing* with her. He fed her all the lines about being a big girl, being a big sister, getting ready for school, being PT'd, almost 3, yadda yadda.  This went on for a week and he said that she should let him know when she was ready to try sleeping without them. So onTuesday night she said she was ready to try to sleep without them and that she wanted to put them in her drawer.  So she picked one of her drawers and put them in there.

Night 1 - this was hellonearth!  We put her to bed at 8pm and she must have gotten out of her bed/room at least 30 times.  Sometimes she was crying and sometimes not.  She never asked for the binkies just kept asking for us to tell her a story or to read to her, etc.  She didn't fall asleep until midnight and I'm sure it was just due to exhaustion.  The next day she did not nap b/c we were out all day.

Night 2 - since she didn't have a nap that day, she was super tired at night but she still managed to prolong her bedtime until 9pm.  She got out of bed one time and came crying to me saying "its really hard to sleep without my binkies". It was heartbreaking but I just told her that she was a big girl and she could do it.  She went back to bed and that was the last we heard from her.  She didn't nap again today because we were out with friends.

Night 3, tonight - DH is out at a work event and I'm alone with both girls.  I thought this would be the night that I'd give in.  I put her up to bed at 8pm and she didn't get out once!!  She's sleeping as I type.  THANK GOD!

All day today she's been telling anyone that will listen... "I'm a big girl. I'm potty trained,  I don't wear diapers at all and I don't even use a binky!"  She is so proud of herself and I'm so proud of her too.  I can't believe how fast she's "growing up".

Funny thing is that the binkies are in her room in her drawer where she put them so if she really wanted them she knows where they are.  I really think she understands that she's a big girl and doesn't need them and I really think that she wants to make us proud of her!  WOW

  • That's great! We are losing the "ditty" this weekend too. I am more than a little nervous about it.

  • That's great!

I know the dread that comes with ditching the binky.  We had a party to get rid of Ashlyn's.

  • Our DD is 3 in September and we just did this too.  It went way better than I thought it would.  It was kinda on her terms though, which I think helped!  She had her soother in the car and for sleeping - one day she hopped out of the car and said, "I'm a big girl.  I don't need the soother anymore and I am throwing it in the garbage."  And she marched right in the house and threw it out.  I was stunned because she loved that thing any time she could get her hands on it.  Within a week she was weaned off for both.  I am soooo glad - I hated that thing (loved it when she was a baby, but I couldn't stand it in her mouth when she got older).  Anyways, maybe it will be better than you think it will.  For us, in the first couple of nights with out it, we just found it was hard to get her to settle.  She wouldn't necessarily ask for it, but she just couldn't seem to get to sleep.  Now, it is a non-issue.

Just thought I would put my two cents in... Good luck!
