Baby Names

Ezra & Iva

These are our favorite names (at least for now!:)) What do you think of these names?  I love the old fashioned and Biblical names that are popular right now, but it's always been very important to me that I use uncommon names for my children.  Iva is also used in Czechoslovakian which is my family's heritage.  It is of Hebrew origin and means God is Gracious.  Ezra is also Hebrew and means Helper.

Any middle name ideas?

Family names for boys are John, Louis, Phillip, Pearce

For girls they are Susanna (susan, zuzana), Elizabeth, Dawn

Last name sounds similar to Coleman.

Thanks for your input!

ETA: I hope this isn't rude, but if we have totally different tastes in names, there's no need to say that these are not your style. :) I probably don't like your style either and that's okay! **I'm more interested in what people think who like uncommon names and in which middle names people think flow best.** Thank you!!

Re: Ezra & Iva

I like Ivy a lot too, thanks for the suggestion!  And Ezra John is my fav so far...

  • I LOVE  Ezra...it's on our boy list. I like it best with Phillip.

And Iva sounds best with Susanna, imo.

I LOVE your boys' names! I would be all over Jonas if one of my good friends hadn't just named her little boy Jonah. :)
  • I like them both.

Ezra John is my favourite boy combo, followed by Ezra Phillip.  Ezra Louis doesn't flow as well to me, and I find Pearce a bit harsh as a name in general.

Iva Suzanne or Susanne I think I like best for a girl.  Susanna is a little too sing-songey for me with the -a ending.  Iva Elizabeth is nice but I don't think flows as well.  Dawn just seems like a very different style to me.

    HTH!

    ezra john

    iva elizabeth

  • Thanks for the opinions--it really helps with the middle naming process! SO HARD TO DECIDE! :)
  • Okay, so Iva is a girl name. I wasn't sure at first.?

Any of those sound good with Ezra (which I love, BTW), and I think Iva Suzanne sounds nice (not a listed option I realize.)?

I really like Ezra.  I was confused because I thought you were also considering Iva for a boy.  It just doesn't sound feminine to me.  Maybe I'm equating it with Ira.

  • Is Iva pronounced like Ivy (long I)? I like it.

    And I love Ezra John.

  • Yes, Iva has a long I and yes, it's a girl's name. I realized the way I wrote the post title made it sound like it could have been another boy's name! It's a variation of the Czechoslovakian name Ivana (I didn't make it up-it's its own name too! :)) and it's the Hebrew version of Jane/feminine for John. Thanks ladies!!
  • I really like both names. Ezra John sounds great and so does Iva Elizabeth.

Ezra is a nice uncommon Biblical name. I like it with John a lot.?
  • I like Ezra. I like John and Phillip the best for middle names, for some reason the more surname-like names don't flow with that name.

Iva is an okay name, but if you are really going for uncommon, I don't think this hits the mark like you think it will. Ava and Eva are quite popular, and to me it's just going to be sandwiched in with that--yes, she might be the only one in her class, but if you are going with an uncommon name so that it's not dated, I don't know that it fits the bill.

Think about the '70s names of Tracy and Stacy. Macy was a lot less common, but if I meet someone of that name, to me it totally dates them to the "Acy" phase in naming.

Susannah is actually suggested by the Baby Name Wizard as a name that sort of goes with all of the current name trends without actually being in the trends and no one is using the name. FWIW.

  • Thanks for all the info!!  It's a good point about Iva...I've thought about that a bit.  I don't think I'm too worried about it becoming 'dated'---I'm more a fan of uncommon names because I like being the only "Kayla" in my circle/workplace/etc....I like that my name is actually associated with me when people who know me hear it, ya know?  But it is definitely something to consider, because you're right--when it comes to boy names I wouldn't use Ethan, even though I like it, because it reminds me too much of the Landon/Hayden/Aiden/Trenton/en/in/on/an trend....hmmmm Thanks!!
  • I like Ezra. Iva is super close to both Ava and Eva, which might be more confusing for her in school, growing up around lots of other little girls with similar names.
    Blank!
  • i like uncommon names. is iva for a girl? i actually like it for either.

to me, ezra is not really uncommon-sounding. obviously there aren't a million ezras walking around but i think because of the bible it seems more common.

out of the names you listed, i'd go with ezra phillip and iva elizabeth. i don't really think elizabeth flows very well with iva because it begins with a vowel sound but susanna ends in -a too and i don't like how that sounds together.

    hope that helps!

  • Thanks guys!

It's so hard for me to find that balance of uncommon but not out there, ya know?  I think I want something that people recognize, but probably don't know anybody actually named it.

But sometimes when I'm thinking about it, I realize that I've known people with VERY unusual names, and it was never a big deal.  People usually just thought it was cool and didn't think much else of it---kinda makes me wanna be braver and go a little crazier:)

hmmmm well, I've got time and my husband is pretty much up for anything I like--we have pretty similar tastes, so we'll see how I feel about these in a few months.  Thanks again!

  • I think Ezra John and Ezra Phillip sound wonderful.

I think Iva Susanna is absolutely lovely.

  • I like both of your name choices, especially Iva pronounced with a long I.  I think Iva Suzanne or Iva Elizabeth would be beautiful and Ezra Philip or Ezra John for boys.
  • Our little man is Ezra Bennett. It seems like since we picked it, we have been seeing Ezra everywhere. Mostly new babies. So I think it's going to become popular and a trend. It happened with our daughters name too.
