Northern California Babies

Kaiser has officially scared me - long (sorry)

I have been getting calls from them daily for the last 4 days since my last appointment about the cerclage that we are doing this coming week and another procedure I am having....

Finally I said..."Look I get we have this all scheduled but I don't understand why you guys keep calling to "check in" on me everyday and end every phone call with "if you have any pain, cramps, bleeding, or just any aches call us immediately.""

There was silence for a moment and she said "They didn't tell you that you have been upgraded to a high risk pregnancy and that until you have the cerclage and X procedure we are contacting you daily from the perentologist's (sp?) office to make sure that everything is going well for you?"

I felt like someone socked me in the stomach....

I said "No...I was not told that."

"Oh, I am so sorry, we have been having so many mixed messages and crossed signals about you, let me just say how sorry for this confusion for you."

She went on to tell me why they upgraded me and what they expected from me, then put me on hold and put the perentoligist on the line with me.  He said that there was nothing to get worried about and he was sure everything would be fine, but ideally they would have had me in for the cerclage this week, but because of the other procedure I have to have they cannot do it until after and there was no way to move the other procedure up; so they are just doing their do-diligence with daily check-ins until things are completed.  He also said that he is going to have his MA call me and set up an appointment for him to see me again late next week to discuss my hip problems and how they wish to care for it the rest of my pregnancy.

I feel calm about this...but it feels like a lot to take in. I kind of expect to just break in half at any moment because now every pinch, twinge, mini-cramp in my stomach has me on full alert.

  • That is scary!  Take it easy and I'll be thinking of you.
Nobody said life would be easy, they just promised it would be worth it.

  • I would be frustrated about the lack of communication with you about being high risk, but I would be really happy that they upgraded you and are taking so many precations and being so careful/attentive.
  • I was part of that program, and it's a good one to be in. It's very effective and they do a great job. Thier preterm birth prevention program is awesome. Be happy they're taking such good care of you - most insurances would wait until you had a 2nd tri loss (or two) before even thinking of taking any precaution. They know what they're doing and their good at it.

Yes, your words from the other day have really resonated with me and I think it is the only reason why I am not freaking out right now.

I never thought I would be an avid Kaiser lover...but I am.  They have been truly amazing with this pregnancy and with my occupational injury and just everything.  I really feel like I get good quality care and it is a HUGE comfort to hear that someone else has been in the program they are putting me in and that it was a positive and successful experience.

Ditto....perientology called me everyday from 7 weeks to about 14 weeks for my hypermesis...I am now down to 1 day a week for my hyperemesis check-ins and gestational hypertension.  I love the program..they really look out for you.

  • ugh. Sucks they did not give you a head's up before the phone calls started. I would not worry too much, I hope everything works out and is ok.
  • oh man, that does sound scary, but it sounds like you are in good hands.

Keep us posted. I am sending you lots of good vibes and dust to you :-)

  • That must have been a scary converstation. Considering they are putting you in the high risk category, I think its great they are checking in on you so often (even though it may seem annoying). Hang in there, you're a tough cookie!

  • Be thankful! At least they're being proactive about keeping that baby growing and healthy!

My high-risk pregnancy fell between some Kaiser cracks, and I firmly believe I could have kept him in longer if I'd had better care.

    (((HUGS)))

  • I'm sorry K, I will pray for you and your little monkey.  I wish you didn't have to be told that way - scary. I will keep you in my thoughts, I hope the procedure will help everything so you can deliver a healthy monkey.

I went on disability due to a high risk when my mom was put into the ICU, it was scary for me - I was 7 months pregnant then.

  • Thanks ladies...you always know how to talk sense into me. =)

  • Scary yes..but also a good thing. They are doing a good job watching you and you are in the best hands Kaiser has to offer. I am not always happy with them (like not communicating properly to you) but the perinatology department is awesome! They have taken great care of SprtyMrs and been on top of every even possible issue..And for my not as serious stuff I have been highly impressed. Even how well she apologized and explained everything to you is awesome...

SO I am personally happy for you that if you have to go thur scary stuff....you are being well taken care of.
