Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Daycare called extreme constipation--HELP

DD's pedi is closed on Fri. except for emergencies, and this might be one, but not sure. Since last night DD has been straining.  Gave her prunes (which usually gets it done) but daycare just called and said she is trembling, screaming...I should take her in, right?  A little stunned at the moment.

  • I would take her...
  • Loading the player...
  • we gave ds an over the counter toddler-friendly suppository once.

You might not need to take her, but I would definitely call and ask what they recommend you do.

Actually, I misspoke, they don't do emergencies...I should take her to the ER?  Thinking...maybe she swallowed something that won't pass...nervous...
  • Does your doctor have an answering service where a nurse may be able to help answer your question? My dd, 13 months, hasn't had that problem, but my older ds, 3 now, had that issue when he was that age. We had to use a glycerin suppository for kids and that worked well. But, I would get a doctors advice on that first.
  • Miralax is safe for LO- it is what our pedi recommended when Lily was having problems and nothing was working. ??

Give her 1/4 of a capful (mix with milk, water, or juice) twice a day until she goes and then once a day until she is back to normal. ??

  • Try warm apple juice and a suppository or take her temp rectally.

I'm not sure on the ER visit, though. They would probably just stick something up there to relieve it or run a bunch of tests and stuff which would only prolong her agony.

Poor little G! I hope it passes soon.

  • Let us know how she is!
  • This happened to DD.  They were able to calm her down.  I sent my mom to go get her.  I told them to give her apple juice and water and see if it helped.  I called dr. and we went in.  They felt her stomach, if I remember right to check for blockage, and then put her on miralax.  What helps my DD even though she is too old for it is to put her in the exersaucer.  She relaxes and goes.  Try to call dr. if you can.
  • What works for us when it is that bad is prune juice and water.  As long as it hasn't been 5 days or so, try that.  Miralax also helps DD.  If your insurance co has a nurse line, call them and see what they say.

Ditto this. Miralax is great for this problem. It will loosen her stools and make it easier to pass. My dd has had constipation problems for a while and we have to give her Miralax once a day every day to keep her regular. She would do the same thing your DD did....scream and cringe. GL and I hope she feels better!
