Strange letter from Pediatrician's Office

Hi all, Just wanted to know what you guys this of this and if anyone had something like this happen to them. My due date is July 18th so sometime in mid-may we went around interviewing pediatricians. We met one who we liked and decided to go with her. She told us that we didn't need to inform her office if we decided to go with her and that to just let the hospital know when we register with them.

Fast forward to yesterday when we receive a letter from the pediatricians office telling us that they appreciate us considering their office but at this time they dont think its a good match and wished us luck in finding another pediatrician. We were shocked to hear that since when we pre-registered with the hospital, we already gave her name as the Pediatrician. Now I have only 4 weeks left and have to go around looking for another pediatrician.

We are just wondering what we could have possibly done for them to send us this letter. When we met the doctor, i thought the interview went well, we asked a bunch of questions which she answered and overall we had liked her.

Just very disappointed and frustrated since its too late to start looking and interviewing someone new.

  • thats odd...Indifferent

honestly never heard of that. wonder if its maybe your insurence?

  • ouch! I've never heard of a doctor rejecting a patient (aka client!) If you really liked the pediatrician I would call the office and see if you could get a better reason as to why. They just seems so odd to me. Maybe it's normal though?
  • Hold the phone - what????  They can reject you???  That's bizarre!

  • I would call them & ask what the hell that letter was all about, lol.  That is very strange.

  • Maybe the doctor is no longer accepting new patients?

I would call them and confirm that this letter is accurate, it seems odd that a practice would turn you away.

I know that an office can "fire" patients if they fail to show up consistently to appointments, but if you haven't done anything against policy, it makes no sense.

  • Maybe they aren't taking any new patients at the moment and that is just a generic letter that they send out. You could call and see what it is all about.

  • Please call them and ask nicely why and maybe request a referral if you feel weird calling - and let us know WHY they sent the letter!!
  • One reason we thought was maybe they had too many patients and were not accepting anyone new but if that was the case, they should have just told us that. This is exactly what the letter states:

"By now you are aware each pediatrician's office has a unique personality and philosophy about how they provide excellent care. We believe your needs will be better met by another pediatrician's office. All out best wishes go with you."

  • Wow. I didn't know doctors could refuse patients on the basis of compatibility. It sounds like there's more going on here...maybe she's planning to change practices?

Anyways...I've gotten some great MD referrals from pharmacists. I figure they know what offices run smoothly and which ones are a nightmare to deal with. (If an office pi$$es off a pharmacist on a regular basis, that's a pretty good sign that the office is too busy or poorly run.)  If you don't have time to interview a pedi, going on a pharmacist's recommendation might work out ok.

    Good luck!

  • My husband did call their office and tried to talk the administrator but couldn't reach her so left a message. He talked to someone else who said she would pull up the letter, read it and then said that from the letter it looks like the DR felt like we wouldn't be a good match???

We have left a message with the nursing administrator and the Pediatrician so hoping to get some answers as to why we were rejected. This is soooo frustrating that now  we have to start looking again and it bothers me now that someone doesn't like us!!! :(((((

  • Did you guys differ on vaccination schedules, etc?

I used to work at at Peditrician's office and I think they must not be accepting new patients at this time. I think they worded it oddly, but maybe they thought if they put not accepting new patients then anyone that had already chosen them would say "I'm not a new patient, we chose you 2 months ago"

I'm sure every person who recieved a letter like this would feel the exact same way. Since when did the pedi's office become Match.com, ffs!!!  NUTS.

I think doctors need to be able to get along with a lot of different personalities, and I wouldn't want to go to a doctor who felt that she had the right to pick and choose her patients.

My pedi's office is very flexible and UNBELIEVABLY accomodating - and I know that the office puts in some late nights to make sure all sick patients are seen on the day they call. Who knows what issues you'd have faced with this office down the line.

Hopefully, the nurse administrator will give you some straight answers. Some of your questions might have struck the doctor the wrong way - regardless of how reasonable they would seem to any of us -  and it would be very helpful to know if you need to change how you interview.

  • No, I don't think so. We asked about it and she told us what the list of vaccines are and also gave us a handout about it. We didn't really disagree on anything at all. Infact, the list of questions we had was the one that I printed off this website.
  • Oh, and you might want to let the nurse administrator know that you'll be filing a complaint with your insurance company. There might be something in their contract that they're violating. Some practices load balance their patients according to insurance carrier, but I'm not sure if that's legal.
  • That is insane.  It sounds like something more is going on.  I would request to speak to the pedi herself, and not just a nurse who can pull up the letter and reiterate what it says back to you.  That is incredibly unprofessional to send that letter right before delivery (essentially).  Unless it was a gross misunderstanding, I would still look for a different pedi, however.

  • Does the hospital call the Pediatrician's office after one pre-registers? I thought they do that only when one gets admitted to deliver. Strangest thing is how did she know we had chosen her unless the hospital called her?

She had told us that we didn't need to inform her if we decided to go with her and to just let the hospital know.

We interviewed with her exactly a month ago on May 18th. If she didn't think we were a good match, she should have let us know within the week from the interview.

  • The letter does sound weird and I fould follow up too as PP suggested.

But, it sounds like you dodged a bullet at the right time. You don't need a pediatrician with crappy communication skills and bizarre office practices.

Call your OB, if you like him or her and ask them for a ped recc. That's how I found mine.

  • Well what I can tell you from dealing with Peds for a few years is YOU DON'T want to stay with her.  Take it as a blessing it happened now before you have to deal with them and have you little one in tow.  I would not even bother for an explanation I would just move on.  I am almost certain in the long run you will be happy you did.  We stayed with a group I absolutely hated for 2 years-not sure why exactly...  But decided when we built our new house that they were too far away and went with another group.  It was the best decision EVER!  They are caring, polite, receptive, prompt and effective.  Don't deal with someone who thinks they are so good they can pick and choose.  You are the client.
  • That is the weirdest thing I have ever heard.

It's probably a good thing regardless. I wouldn't want someone like that taking care of my child. They seem very questionable.

  • They may not be accepting new patients right now?
  • that sounds SO bizarre!  i agree with everyone who said it's got to be something stupid -- like they are no longer accepting your insurance, are no longer taking new patients, or something comparable.

i had a friend who really wanted to do an alternative vaccine schedule and wasn't willing to compromise on it at all, and her pediatrician told her that she was willing to work with the parent, but that part of her (the doc's) practice beliefs were that children need to be vaccinated, and if the parent wasn't willing to discuss and compromise, their office wasn't the best place for them.  it was all done very nicely, and it was very clear, and i think my friend still respects the doctor -- as a practitioner, you have to stand up for your beliefs as well as working with others!  i would honestly try to get an explanation, and then be glad that you've dodged a bullet BEFORE LO is born.
