Boy Name Poll - help me out please.

Hi Ladies,

I'm still PG, after a few very annoying ?false alarms, but if baby doesn't get here by Thursday 25th naturally, I will have a repeat C-Section, so there is an end in sight!?

So, after much blood shed and tears, we have finally warmed to ONE boy name, but after posting on baby Names last night I'm having second thoughts.?

In the Irish/Scottish Community it is very much a Boy's name, but the feedback I'm getting here in America is that it is more thought of as a Girl's name (Thanks Gilmore Girls).

So heres the poll?

  • Oh and a big hello to everyone, hope you all are well!!

  • Hi L.  The only Rory I've know IRL was an Irish man, so I totally think of it as a boy name... or maybe gender-neutral, which I'm an obvious fan of.
  • Love to hear me some Irish names...

I said "reminds me of a girl name" but before you think I am excluding it as your sons name....

Try the Irish spelling, when I see it spelled this way I KNOW it is a boy's name:

    Rauri

means Red king or Great King...so that is totally a boy name...but again I like the traditional spelling ;)

  • I've heard it for boys and girls but know that it is traditionally for a boy. I love it and who cares about the Gilmore Girls. It's unique.
  • In college I worked with a guy named Rory, and he was adorable. I like it (and was unaware about the Gilmore Girls connection).

    Yes

  • I wouldn't worry about the "girl name" issue too much.  I have a friend named Shannon and everybody thinks he's a woman when he leaves his name.  Then when they hear him, they do a quick double-take and it's over.  It's really not that big of a deal for him and Rory is much more ambiguous, so I think it'll be fine.
  • You know, I'm a Gilmore Girls fan, so I think of Rory that way, but your little guys friends and peers most likely *won't* know about Gilmore Girls, so I think you'll be fine.  Go with what you like! And good luck.
  • Honestly I hope no one goes by these polls.  A name choice is just that.  Your choice.  If you love it, then that should be all that matters.  FWIW, I know one Rory and he is about 10.
  • I voted NMS but being Irish I have always thought of that as a boys name.  I have some family members with that and all are male.
  • I went to elementary school with a Rory (boy).  I am not sure if I love it enough, but I don't think of it as a girl's name, having known a boy by that name before.
  • I also love Gilmore Girls, but don't think of Rory as a girl name.. probably b/c John has a cousin named Rory, but I agree with the Kendall about the traditional spelling.. (although I see your point in that is gets butchered a lot)

    Good luck!

  • Thumb's up - it's my nephew's name.
  • Hi!!!! Sooo glad to see you pop on and I hope your little one gets here soon! Wink
  • Hi to you too!!  LOVE the name Rory for a girl OR a boy!

  • LOVE it. And that's a very manly middle name, so I think it's totally fine for a boy.  Now if you were going to name him Rory Kathleen, then I'd wonder. :)
  • I'd say if you like it, go for it! Don't worry about what other people think. If you and DH agree, that's more important!

A very close friend of mine had a female cousin named Aurora whom everyone called Rory. She was, unfortunately, killed in a car accident several years ago. My friend plans to honor her by naming her first-born child Rory, regardless of whether it is a boy or girl.
