Today was primarily a wait and see type of day. The only procedure
Samantha had to have done was another urine draw for a urine culture.
She didn't have to have any more needle pokes!
On rounds the
Doctor's told us that the blood cultures hadn't come back yet so they
weren't sure if the bacteria in her blood was the same as in the urine.
They told us we would have another urine draw today and if that was
clear, she would have the VCGU (kidney reflux dye test) tomorrow. They
are debating how long she needs to be on the IV antibiotics and when
she can switch to the oral medications. They made it sound like she
would be on antibiotic prophylactics for awhile after she stopped these
antibiotics.
This evening we found out that her urine draw
didn't have any indicators of the bacteria but did have some lingering
leftovers. They are delaying the VCGU until Friday to make sure the
urine and urinary tract is as clean as possible. The second blood draw
hasn't grown any bacteria! The first draw came back E-coli which is the
bacteria found in her urine!! That means the bacteria jumped from the
urine to the blood...this is much better than having two types of
bacteria which would mean there is another problem going on.
She
is just all smiles today...cooing and staring at the Doctor's dark blue
scrubs! She was actually awake and playing for a bit today...so happy!!
She is still hating the IV in her elbow crook because they have a split
all the way up her arm so she can't really bend it at all...makes her
mad because she can't get her hand near her mouth!
We still
don't have a date for getting to go home. I think we should have a
better idea once we have the VCGU test done on Friday. Opthomology is
supposed to visit us on Friday as well so hopefully we will have an
update on her right eye as well! Tomorrow sounds like it will be
another wait and see kind of day!
Thanks for all the well wishes and thoughts...we really appreciate them!!
