How Many Baby Outfits Needed?

I need to stop going to the store. Everytime I do I walk out with several baby outfits. It's hard to resist the clothes though, they are so cute!

Anyway, I'm trying to figure out how many outfits I'll need. For the 3 month size I figure I'll mostly use long sleeve footed sleepers, how many are needed? I have about five Carters brand ones, do I need more? I also plan to get a few gowns, maybe two? What else should I make sure I have?

Re: How Many Baby Outfits Needed?

  • I kind of went crazy with baby clothes, but I bought all mine used at consignment stores so I paid $1-$2 per outfit (all brand name stuff in perfect condition). I think I bought three big shopping bags full of clothes from newborn to six months.

  • How often do you want to do laundry?

I didn't use the baby gowns because I was worried about keeping those little feet warm. Just stuck with the footed PJs. Heck that is what DS wore for the first 6 months! He had just a few other real outfits.

We had about 8 pairs of footed pjs, 2 sleep sacks (google halo sleep sacks) and lots of onsies.

  • In the case of clothes, I always say more is better - the less often you'll have to do laundry!  It depends alot on how often your LO spits up and has diaper explosions, which you just never know til he/she is here.  But if you can find some decent deals, I'd definitely stock up - if you figure a couple of outfits per day, that's 10-15.  I love the Carter's footed pj's - they are such nice quality, really affordable, and seem quite comfy.  Gap are nice, too, but tend to run pretty long - at least for my chubby baby! - and are a little more expensive.

I hated the gowns.  DD's legs and feet always popped out and got cold!  But some people love them, so....  Make sure you also have some plain Gerber or Carters onesies (Gerbers run really small) to layer under stuff in case it's especially cold.  5-6 should do it.  And don't forget socks (5-6 should do) and hat and mittens for going outside (2 sets).

These are my recommendations, FWIW....  Enjoy your shopping!

  • Honestly it depends on your baby. My son spit up A LOT- sometimes it seemed like the entire bottle came back up. We changed him probably 3 or 4 times a day. Thankfully he has gotten past that stage, but for a while we were going through sooo many clothes in a day. I would wait and not go too crazy- you can always buy more if need be. Also, keep in mind that just because it says 3 month doesnt mean it is 3 month for you LO. My son is 8months old and is wearing 18 month clothing! We have a bunch of 12 month clothes he never got to wear because we didnt realize he had outgrown them already. Once baby is born, try to find clothes that give you a weight range instead of a month. It's so much more accurate!!
  • I was lucky and was able to get tons of sleepers at garage sales!! I have 15 footed, and probaly 10-15 gowns!!! Since I am doing cloth diapers I want to focus laundry on those instead of constantly washing clothes!!! Plus they don't stay in the 0-3 months for very long :( They grown way to fast!!!!
  • I loved the gowns for the first month or so. This time around I am going to look for sleepers with zippers not snaps - snaps aren't so bad when they are little, but they are more time consuming and as they get older they become more difficult. Childrens Place sells sleepers with zippers, but they aren't as cute as the Carters. As far as outfits - DS lived in Rompers for the first 4-6 months or so. I bought outfits (overalls - shorts/shirt sets) and he rarely wore them.  The rompers were just so much easier and Carters had a great selection (dept stores too).  Shirts rode up, and onsies/shorts meant I had to take 2 things off to change him.  As for #'s - you need more :)  You will be doing laundry too much.  Spit-up on clothes, and leaking diaper, some days you will go threw 4 outfits, other days you will stay in the same one all day.
