Eye disorders - Glaucoma and Aniridia

Hi ladies,

my son, who is now 10 days old, was diagnosed at birth with both Congenital Glaucoma and Aniridia (no irises).

Just curious if anyone here has a child with these conditions, and if so, what if any procedures has your child had?

thanks a bunch!

Re: Eye disorders - Glaucoma and Aniridia

  • My only experience is through my students. (I'm a teacher of the blind and visually impaired)

My student with congenital glaucoma has to take drops several times a day (steroid drops), and has had several surgeries to place a shunts in her (back of) eye for drainage. She has had to have this done several times, because the shunt slips and/or she has some discomfort from it. Overall, as long as they are checked regularly, and it's regulated with drops, it can really stabilize the vision. She has to also be careful during phy.ed as to not participate in some sports with are more rough. If she got hit in her eye, it can do a lot of damage.

As far as aniridia, the treatment varies. Most likely, glaucoma is the number one factor for the cause of aniridia. Down the road, contacts can be worn to resemble an eye with an iris (as far as cosmetic purposes).

    Good luck with everything!

  • Not the same thing, but DS #1 has Coloboma (keyshaped pupil) that is both cosmetic and goes through to the optic nerve so it affects his vision.  There is nothing that anybody can do about it though so we just deal with any issues as they come up.

Congrats on the new baby boy!
