3rd Trimester

stripping the membrane early

I'm really trying to research this inducing labor thing. I just read that some doctors will strip your membrane as early as 38 weeks even if you are perfectly healthy and have no problems. I had no idea this was true. Anybody heard of this being done?

Re: stripping the membrane early

  • Yes.

Some doctors will strip your membranes during an internal without telling you. Separating the bag of water from the uterus releases hormones that can help soften the cervix and bring on contractions. Having your membranes stripped isn't a guarantee it will cause you to go into labor soon.

  • yes in fact i have tried almost everything possible to self induce this labor. I went for my weekly on mond and asked the dr if she can strip the membrane and she said she cant do it until im 39 weeks. i am currently 4cm dilated and 50% effaced and soooooo impatient. she said once she does it i can go into labor within hours the most 24 to 48 hrs....yay cant wait....
  • Stripping the membranes doesn't always work to put you into labor, although it worked for me.  With DS I had mine stripped at 39wk, 4d and had my son the next evening.  I have no idea how early you can have it done, but for those I know that had it early (38th week) it seems they had it done more then once.

    This.

38 weeks or 40.... it won't "work" if your body isn't ready anyway.

  • I am 3cm and 70% effaced and had mine stripped the other day due to medical reasons but not wanting a pitocin induction and it did absolutely nothing. It's not a guarantee, but it might work.

I have known people to go into labor a few hours later, and people who are 41wks and it hasn't even done anything at all.

  • My doc says she hasn't been too impressed with the results when she purposely strips the membranes.

It's pretty painful and she also says it sometimes happens by accident when a doc is doing an internal.  You can have your membranes stripped multiple times, if you're not ready you're simply not ready and its not going to do anything.
