3rd Trimester

Things I didn't use in my hospital bag...

So there were some items I packed that just became a waste of space.

underwear - hospital gave a stack of disposable, mesh ones that were awesome! Especially if you tear like I did.

pads - again, hospital gave thick, log-like ones.

make-up - seriously too tired to care.  I wore just powder the day friends came by.

pants to wear home - hurt too much to wear anything other than gowns or loose loungepants

ipod - didn't even cross my mind to use it since the new LO is all you think about

pillows - nurses gave us all the pillows we wanted

Hope this helps cut down the load! Poor DH will have stuff to carry down the day you go home anyway (flowers & balloons, a few gifts, etc,).

Re: Things I didn't use in my hospital bag...

  • Thanks for the post. Embarrassed I'm only packing my iPod so I can surf the Internet and play the games I have on it while I'm in labor.

What items did you pack that you got a lot of use out of or you would recommend packing?

  • I am going in tonight to be induced so I will keep this in mind!  I am bringing my Ipod though...it's in the case with my camera!  It has all of those fun games on it!

  • My hospital actually has "maternity undies" on the list of things to bring with you, so I'd definitely say it's something that people should find out about before assuming they're covered and leaving the panties at home.

I think things like pads are a personal choice. If you don't want to feel like you're sitting on a diaper, it might be wise to bring some of your own. I refuse to wear thick pads that resemble the crap I was given when I was 12 when I can wear nice thin overnight pads that are just as absorbent.?

Pillows I am bringing. I have heard that hospital pillows can suck, and not all hospitals have dozens lying around to give out as extras. I'd also rather have my own cushy one than a flat one that smells like a million other patients.?

I totally understand what you (OP) are saying, I just wanted to add that I think some of the things you deemed pointless may in fact be very useful to other people during their hospital stays. Everyone is different, and some of what you listed are absolute musts for me and I know they will be used.?

  • Thanks so much for this, I just started my basic packing and it's good to hear from experience what is needed and what is not.

I thought the same thing before I had DS, but if you have a vag delivery, you are going to want as much padding down there as possible! You are so sore it's unbelievable...esp if you tear or have an episiotomy. My thin pads were a complete waste.

This.  I brought my own undies and although I used the hospital ones for a while, I did end up using my own too.  I just made sure I didn't care if I ever saw them again or not.   Make-up - I put a little on, yes I was tired but it made me feel good.   Pants:  definitely don't pack constrictive ones - I wore sweatpants home:)  Pads - I mostly used hospital ones too, but for the way home I wore my own.

  • I will be bringing my own pillows for sure!  I can't stand flat pillows!

  • I agree, you dont need the ipod or pillows (or boppy). You also dont need the exercise ball if you are getting an epi.

I did use my own underwear (hated the mesh ones). i liked myown pads too. I also wore jeans home from hospital and comfy pants while at hosp. I put makeup on both days. So take this with a grain of salt... you never know how YOU will feel or what you will need. Oh and I brought 4 newborn outfits and she wore all of them. The hospital only gave me one baby shirt, so i was glad I packed lots of clothes.

  • I just got a list from my OB/Gyn and the lady who was scheduling my next appt. said made sure I followed it closely because the hospital here has stopped providing quite a bit of the things I've been hearing people say theirs is.  Just double check and make sure you know what your hospital provides and what it doesn't!
