Vaseline??

Okay - so with DD I used vaseline to help protect her bum from wetness when she was a baby.   Now, I'm trying to stay away from chemicals, petroleum skin products etc.   So, what should I used on new DD's bum when she's an infant?  Nothing?  Something?   Does anyone know of any more natural products for baby bums?  I don't mean diaper rash creams, more of the preventative type stuff.   TIA!

Re: Vaseline??

  • Both of my DD's were allergic to just about everything you can use on their bottoms. I didn't use anything as a preventative measure, and if they had a rash I would just make sure to keep them clean and dry, and let them air out a little at each diaper change.

Thanks!  DD#1 has eczema, so I've gone through ALOT of skin care products that work for her.  It seems if I don't use anything, she gets patches, and if I use the wrong thing, she gets patches:)  Finally found stuff that works, so I'm ultra sensitive to what I will be using on this DD:)  Maybe I just won't worry about it too much then.
  • Oh, that's terrible. I have a friend with eczema, and I know she has a lot of issues finding something that works. Hopefully this DD won't have that same issue. I can imagine it's frustrating that nothing seems to work for it!

  • Have you tried lanolin? They sell jars of "bag balm" that is 100% lanolin and works well when I get patches from excema....

Boudreaux's Butt Paste...I just saw an add that they have an all natural line out now.  We used it as a preventative on my nephew's...I don't ever remember them having diaper rash.

  • There is an all-natural product called "Butt Paste" that they sell pretty much everywhere - I *think* it is preventative, but I don't remember. Also, the California Baby brand products are all organic or all-natural.  We are trying to stay away from chemicals, too. We got so much Johnson's Baby Lotion at our shower, and we exchanged it all for all-natural stuff instead. GL!

  • This is a great website I use to check product safety before I buy them.  Vaseline actually got a great safety rating of 0 out of 10 for safety so I wouldn't be as worried to use that as other products that contain parabens. I have learned that not everything that says organic or natural is still safe.  This website really helps break things down.

  • As you're trying to avoid chemicals, I assume you will be cloth diapering. If so, you really don't need any preventative measures, as they are much much kinder on little bums than disposables. The fact that you will be changing them more often helps with the wetness issue as well (though, changing disposables more often would help too.)

If you weren't planning to CD, I would seriously look into it. No chemicals, far fewer rashes on average, much cuter and, in the end, cheaper. ?

I won't be using cloth diapers (well, not right off the bat anyway).  I'm trying out Huggies Pure and Natural, which I know are no where near cloth diapering, but I love huggies anyway so I'll be trying them.   I've been using natural products to help DD#1's skin, which is why I'm second guessing the vaseline thing.

FWIW, we cloth diaper and DD has still had some amazingly bad diaper rash from time to time.  Granted, she has sensitive skin, but cloth diapering for us has not eliminated the need to find decent skin care for her.
