Pregnant after 35

Braxton Hicks anyone??

Ugh....thought these would happen a lot later in the 3rd tri!! Since this is my first time carrying this far, I had no idea what was going on and paid a visit to L&D on Sunday. After a painful internal and having an hour long NST, they decided nothing was wrong and I could go on my way......I felt like that silly paranoid pregnant lady.....I was just wondering if anyone else was experiencing them?!

Re: Braxton Hicks anyone??

  • Nope! I'm at 33 weeks today and have not felt these yet.

I asked the nurse who teaches my childbirth class and she said that some women feel them as early as 2nd tri and others may never feel them.

Oh yeah.  Monday I was miserable with them.  I called the OB the next day (even thought I felt better) and just asked a few questions about when to get concerned and how to remedy it.  They said drink a gallon of water a day, and put your feet up.  (I think this is the standard answer for most pregnancy related twitches and pains.)  If they get really regular, you can consistently time them, and too painful, then call the doctor.

I don't remember having these w/ DD, at least not all day like I did Monday.  Hopefully it will be a while before they come back.

I've felt them forever, I just didn't know what I was feeling. Now that I'm farther along and they're happening more frequently I finally realized that the weird, annoying tightening IS BH. I really wouldn't worry unless they're really frequent or painful. That said, they are strange so I don't think you're a paranoid pg lady for being checked out.
  • OH yeah. My yoga teacher who is also a Doula said that the way you can tell the difference between BH and regular contractions because BH are from the bellybutton down and real ones go all the way up to the top of your uterus. That calmed me down a bit. Plus baby girl is moving around like crazy. It feels like she is trying to push herself butt first out through my bellybutton - OUCH!

  • I just had some weird isolated incidents, usually in the middle of the night.  But overall, I told the OB, none unless those counted....

You did the right thing.  Staying home, had it been something else, would have been a huge mistake!

  • Thanks ladies.....with all my complications, bedrest....a prime candidate for PTL, among a gazillion other things to worry about. I got a little nervous....so happy I'm not alone in this!
  • I think I had one yesterday, I got up from my chair and my uterus got real tight and hard and stayed that way for about a minute. It was weird but didn't hurt at all. Haven't had any more since then, so we'll see.
Me: 44 DH: 42. DS born healthy at 40 weeks 8/24/09. TTC since then with no luck or ART. Surprise BFP 8/6/14... MMC @ 8 weeks 4 days... Miss you everyday sweet baby angel.
  • I have experienced BH with both pregnancies. With my daughter I had them all the time. I think I started having them around 30 weeks.

Same with this pregnancy. I started having them earlier than 30 weeks, but I can't remember. My BH with this baby are much more painful and intense. I think it's because he's in an odd horitzontal position in my stomach. They wake me up at night, they're so bad. I have multiple BH a day - I'd say probably 15-20.

I can still tell the difference between regular contrax (which feel like period cramps) versus BH (which feel like a weird, tightening sensation.)

  • Last week when I had that one spot, I called ob, turned out it was the beginning of PTL and I had been having contractions that I was not really aware of or didn't understand what they were. I told her I almost did not call because I felt like silly paranoid pg lady and she said I should never feel like that, she would have been happy to see me and say it was nothing if it had been nothing. If you are worried go in or call.

  • I have been getting these throughout my thrid trimester, not sure exactly when they started. But I feel them every day. and sometimes very often throughout the day. They aren't painful for me, just that tightening feeling.
