Baby Names

How would you pronounce this name?

My friend's EDD is tomorrow.  She has chosen the name Arlene Leilani for her daughter.  How would you pronounce Arlene?  She wants the name to be pronounced Ar-len.  Is there a better way of spelling this name without causing any confusion for the baby's future teachers?

Re: How would you pronounce this name?

  • Arlene is R-lean.

If she wants it R-lehn, tt should be spelled Arlen. But I'm 99% sure that's a male name.

Arlene will always be pronounced Are-lean.  She will be correcting people constantly.  I also think Arlen would be a better way to spell it.

Yes I think almost everyone would pronounce Arlene as Are-lean.

For the pronounciation Are-lehn I guess I would spell it Arlen (though I too think this is a boy name)

  • If you suggest there's a better spelling, will she take your advice?
  • Ar-lean is Arlene. Ar-lyn is Arlen.
    Blank!

Yes, she is willing to take any suggestion.

  • In that case, I'd suggest Arlen to her if she wants to cut down the confusion.
  • Are-Leen

If she wants to name her Arlene that sounds like 'Are-Len', then I think she should take the 'e' off the end.....OR...Spell it like Arlynne, Arlyn, or Arlin.

Ar-lean is Arlene. Ar-lyn is Arlen.

This is a good idea actually... spelling it Arlyn would be more likely to be prounounced the way she wants, but looks more feminine than Arlen.

  • I have a great aunt named Arlene. She's actually like a grandmother to me and pronounces it Ar-lean. That poor kid will have to correct everyone her entire life.?
  • I just posted this on the other thread about this name, but in case you didn't see it, you could suggest Arl?ne, because the accent would give it the sound she is looking for, but her teachers still might mispronounce it!

  • I would think Arlyn or Arlin too.

I'd suggest Arlen or Arlin. I don't think "Arlen" is common enough to be instantly recognizable as a boy's name, and I am not a big fan of using Y as a vowel substitute.
  • ARLENE is  Are- lean if she wants ar len it w ould have to be spelled like that.. ARLEN or ARLIN would be more R- lin
