Being that we on this board are mostly Michiganders, I wondered if any of you -like me, enjoy our fantastic Lake Michigan West coast during the summer? ?My Husband and I love to go to Muskegon and spend time at the beach in August every year and I am afraid I might not be allowed to swim in the cool fresh waters of Lake Michigan due to bacteria and it's potential harm to the unborn baby. ?Does anyone know if this is a false warning or if we should really not be swimming in lake or ocean waters when pregnant? ?I will be 23 weeks when we plan on going, and I am really looking forward to it, but I am a swimmer and if I can't swim it will be really hard for me to enjoy it. ?I have not yet asked my Doc, I just have read so many mixed things about this, I thought I would put it out there to you guys to tell me what you have learned about this. ?I thought it might be crossing some of your minds too since we have the Great Lakes in common here. ?Thanks.
Re: Is Lake or Ocean swimming safe?
Swimming was fine. I had gone to North Carolina when I was around 20 weeks and swam all week in the ocean. Your baby is pretty well protected in there, so as long as you're healthy your body can fight off any bacterias. I was never told this, but I remember girls on the 3rd tri board being told not to swim when they were closer to their due date. I think the reasoning was their doctors didn't want their water to break while swimming and then at that point the risk for infection can go up.
I live in Muskegon.
I would imagine that it's safe but if you have any questions, just talk to your doctor to make sure!!
