binky weaning advice?

i am thinking of only keeping binkies in the crib and not letting them be available anywhere else around the house.  but it seems a little early to take her binky away for naps and night time.  am i wrong?

Re: binky weaning advice?

  • We've started this. DS only gets his binky for naps, bedtime, and if he's really upset. He has an Elmo couch in our living and it's the only place he can have it outside of his crib. If he's laying on it, he can have the binky. But the minute, he gets up off of it, we take it away. So far, so good!

  • DS gets his at night and at naptime, and if he's is really cranky or fussy.  I don't plan on taking them away completely until he's cut all his teeth.  But I do try to keep him from having one all the time, only when I feel like he needs it.

My pedi said to cold turkey it this month, and I don't plan on it.  DD is pretty strong-willed.  When it's time to get rid of the binky, we'll both know it.
  • When I weaned DD from her binky I did it like that -I first started only giving it to her at sleep times -no other times throughout the day.  It was rough for 2 or 3 days but then she seemed fine without it.  And once she got used to that for a week or two I started on naps (still gave it to her at bedtime -I figured if a nap was ruined without it I could survive but I wanted to wait until she was used to sleeping at least sometimes without it before taking it away at night).  For naps I would let her have it until the point she was almost asleep or just until her eyes closed and then take it away so she'd have to finish falling asleep without it.  Sometimes that would upset her so I'd give it back to her for another 30 seconds or so until she was almost asleep again and take it back out....repeating as necassary...eventually she'd fall asleep without it.  Then I just shortened the length of time she could have it for naps, no longer letting her get to the almost asleep state, and eventually cut them out entirely for naps.  And after she was used to that for a week or so I worked on nighttime.  It was a sloooww process for us (took about a month from start to finish) because at that time DD was still not sttn and I just didn't have it in me to take it cold turkey and deal with NO sleep.

    Good luck!

  • At 1 yr we cut it down to only naps & nighttime. He never takes one at Daycare so I knew it would be pretty easy. We just had to make sure to leave them in his crib or our bed so he wouldn't see them during the day. We just kept saying "binkies are for night night". Now he even takes it out on his own and hands it to us before he climbs out of our bed! Because it's now so limited, I feel absolutely no pressure to take it away completely- he even takes it out if he wants to say something in the night or in the am before we get up.
  • I hav no intention of taking it away for naps and bedtime any time soon. Right now I try to keep them all in her crib, although she seems to find new ones all the time. I try to reserve them for the car and for sleep.

  • I read on the toddler board once that someone's pedi recommended they snip the end off all the pacis.

She said her kiddo put it in his mouth, took it out and looked at it funny, put it back in his mouth, took it out, threw it across the room and walked away.

    They were done with pacis.

    The paci's were all "broken"

Never dealt with this myself but I thought that seemed like a GREAT idea so I wanted to pass it along!

    Shell?

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.

I'm a SO trying this tonight.  Great idea - thanks!!!

  • my folks snipped the ends off too.  worked.

dd only uses it at naps and night time.  we just started pulling it out when she was playing happily b/c she didn't need it.  and we dn't leave them laying around.  for a while we would give it when she was upset, but now we try to do other things.
