I'm hoping someone can help with my dd's diaper rash issues. I started cd'ing my dd around 2weeks and at the end of the first week I starting noticing dd's butt was getting really red and a few open sores appeared. I immediately stopped cd'ing and switched to sposies. I used Angel Baby balm and within about 3-4 days the rash went away.
I use kissaluvs and prefolds with covers and I stripped them all with dawn, did about 5 hot rinse cycles and put the kissaluvs in the sun to dry.
I started back up cd'ing yesterday and this morning her butt is starting to get red again! I use CC detergent and I know some ladies were having issues... could it be the detergent? Should I switch to Planet or Country Save and see if that helps?
The diapers don't smell fresh coming out of the dryer... It's not a bad smell, just not fresh. And I don't notice too bad of an ammonia smell when she pees. It smells like normal pee and poop to me.
Any suggestions? Is there a better way to strip the diapers that might help with the rash? Thanks!
Re: CD newbie with diaper rash issues
I doubt that you need to strip to deal with the rash- unless it is yeast, it is likely just that she has sensitive skin. The diapers you are using leave wetness next to her. How long do you go between changes?
You might try cutting up some fleece and using that to make a stay-dry liner and see if it helps.
Thanks andrealynn... I go about 3 hours between changes... Is that too long? I'll try to cut it down and change her more often. I'll also try using more detergent.
The standard line from pediatricians on diaper changing is at minimum every 2 hours. I changed my DD: one hour after feeding [major pee download] and whenever it seemed appropriate. At least with CD's we aren't paying 25-40 cents every time we change them! Just enjoy the cost savings as you change more often. A few more diapers in that load of laundry is negligible.
And check into perhaps altering detergent.
