Clicky Poll: Where to live?

I need a little bit of help. We're looking at grad schools for DH. I'm looking at different areas and schools. I have it narrowed down to about 7 different places.

Re: Clicky Poll: Where to live?

  • I din't vote, because I don't know enough about all the options.  Just wanted to tell you that I lived in Athens when I was in grad school and I didn't like it.  It is very much a typical college town - which is cool if that's the scene you like, but it just wasn't me.  I actually moved back to Atlanta my 2nd year of grad school and just commuted for classes 2 days/week.

  • Good to know, thanks! One of the hardest parts of finding a school is trying to find a place that's family friendly.

  • I'm just biased.  I love Chicago (lived there for 10 years).  Where is DuPaul?  Did you mean DePaul and is there a DePaul separate from Chicago?

  • DePaul is a school that is in the actual city of Chicago.  You could live in the burbs and take the train to school.
  • I chose North Carolina only because I love the Carolinas for vacationing.  I live in Ohio and it is not bad, just not anything overly exciting about it.  Lots of farms and football.
  • I vote either VA or Charlotte. Charlotte has been very up and coming and I believe it is a cheaper cost of living down there. It would depend in VA for me though. I live in southeastern VA and I love it. Northern VA is beautiful but the closer to DC you are EVERYTHING is more expensive.
  • Do you like cold weather or warm weather?  That would influence me a lot!

Cost of living will be much higher in Chicago or Northern Virginia than it would be in some of the other areas.  That's something to think about too.

How important is it to you to be near or in a city?  To have access to theater, museums, things like that?

It's hard to answer without knowing what your priorities are.

I have heard Charlotte has very low housing prices and is beautiful.
Chicago is an amazing city and has so much to offer.
Virginia is like 2 states- Northern Virginia is really more like Washington DC. Southern Virginia is much more southern in it's feel.  Both are great but they're so different.
I don't know much about the other areas.

  • Sorry, I got mixed up about DePaul. lol

We'd be in Fairfax at George Mason.

Ronnie, have been trying to convince him to pick something closer to home, but to no avail. He's a stubborn stubborn man. lol

  • awww - MN isn't on the list!  You could have bought one of the houses across the street and we could have been neighbors!
  • Northern VA has a higher cost of living but you would have so much to do with DC being so close.  NC is an amazing place to live.  If I could move anywhere that would be where I move to.  I lived in the High Point area for a bit of time and loved it.
  • Visit Charlotte before moving there if it remains a front-runner.  It's full of young professionals (or was), but the economy sent a lot of their job markets tumbling.  There are major traffic problems there and it's in a very hot part of the southeast (no ocean breeze, no mountain breeze).  I love the south (live near Charleston, SC now), but Charlotte isn't a favorite among the people that I know here.

Fairfax is nice, and you would be able to visit DC pretty easily with the kids (free museums!!)

Mommy to Seth (4) and Catherine Anne (13 mo.) Excited to welcome a third child in March of 2013!
  • Like someone else said, it's hard to say not knowing what your priorities are. I lived in Athens my freshman year when I went to UGA.  I ended up transferring to Univ of FL b/c DH (then boyfriend) was in FL and I hated the cold (I've lived in South FL all my life and can't handle it).  But I think Athens is a great town.  I think it's probably geared more towards the college.  But it's pretty and people are friendly.  It rains a lot in the winter, which is kind of depressing, but I'm used to South FL weather.  But Atlanta is about 45 mins away, which is nice.  One of my customer's children lives there (not for school) and loves it.

Charlotte is nice and has low housing prices, but traffic is bad and it seems like it's getting as overdeveloped as Atlanta (that could be bad or good depending on person).   Chicago is a nice city but cold (cold weather is a big deal to me :))  and I would think expensive.

  • I actually adore Athens because of the art & music scene there.  But, if that's not your thing, I'd go with Charlotte.  Charlotte would be a close # 2, for me.

  • Athens is an awesome town.

Chicago is fantastic, but expensive. But, there are a lot of things that mitigate the cost of living in Chicago. You dont' have to own a car, for example.

West Lafayette, IN is a nice town. My husband went to Purdue. Its not the coolest college town there is, but its nice. Good schools and a nice community.

What is he going to study?

I think that Charlotte is kinda lame, myself. If I were to go back to NC, I'd definitely choose Chapel Hill. Chapel Hill is an awesome place to live, and has a fairly bullet-proof economy.

  • I wouldn't discount Athens just because it is a college town.  There are tons of areas you can live right outside of Athens that are much more family friendly and have a cheap cost of living.  Like pp said, Athens is close to Atlanta, so you could always live somewhere between Athens and Atlanta, where there are tons of nice areas, and your H could just commute into Athens for class.  Athens also allows you to be at the beach or the mountains in under a day.

We live in Atlanta now and have thought of moving to Athens if DH takes a job transfer, mainly because we hate living in such a busy city.
