XP: How will I ever be able to quit swaddling?

I really would love to wean DS from swaddling, but this is the only way he will go to sleep and stay asleep! If he doesn't have on the swaddleme he fights soooo hard and cries. And then when he does fall asleep and Iay him down he wakes up soon after. When I put him in it, he is instantly quiet and I can just lay him down in his crib. I tried one arm out, didn't work and now he is strong enough to get his arms out and it wakes him up during the night and before this week he was sleeping 10 hour stretchs straight then a feed and then for another 2-3. If you have been through this and have any advice, PLEASE help!!!

We kept swaddling until they were ready to quit (they broke out). I think you would still be fine to swaddle for another month yet.

Do whatever you need to do to have him sleep good.

  • What kind of swaddle are you using? DS is a lot older and most nights doesn't break out of his although he has once or twice. We use the swaddle me blankets and then just put them in the dryer to "shrink" them when they get to lose.
  • We swaddled until 5 months.  DD went cold turkey to a sleep sak in one night.  DS wasn't ready and up all night when we tried to go cold turkey so we want to swaddling.  A week later he learned to roll in the swaddle so we had to deswaddle.  Turns out he just wanted to sleep on his stomach and he needed to be able to roll to do this.  We couldn't do the arm out thing because that just led to quicker escapes so we just did cold turkey.

We only had 2 nights of bad sleep out of the whole ordeal and it really wasn't that hard to break when they were ready.  I say keep swaddling until he is ready.  No harm done and when baby sleeps everyone is happy.  Good luck.

I think they just grow out of it, so I wouldn't push it.  It may take a few nights, but it will get pretty much back to the same.  Right now he thinks swaddle=sleep, so maybe introduce something else to make him think sleep (white noise machine) while you still can swaddle.  Then hopefully when you take it away, he'll still understand sleepy time.

DD started rolling on her belly and we had to go cold turkey before we could do much training.  nighttime is fine, but naps are AWFUL, though that could just be her age too.
