Babies: 9 - 12 Months

10.5 month old not drinking from a sippy...

DD will sometimes drink water, never formula and doesn't eat table food all that well.  Suggestions?

Re: 10.5 month old not drinking from a sippy...

  • DS just drank formula from his sippy for the first time today!

It all takes time for them to get used to it. Just keep trying.  Offer table foods at every meal and eventually she'll get it.

  • i'm in the same boat and DS will be 1 next week.  i would love to see the replies.

  • For table food...we just kept offering it.  I put some puffs or what not on her tray, then gave her the purees as usual.  I'd offer her a bite of something on my finger -- sometimes she'd take it, sometimes not.  Eventually something clicked, and she shovels the food in so fast I have to watch her to make sure she doesn't stuff her mouth too full!

As for the sippy -- have you tried different types?  I think a lot of babies favor one over the others.  DD really likes straw cups, or taking sips out of a "big girl" cup.

  • Have you tried several different kinds? DS prefers the Nuby or Munchkin brand with the soft silicone spout or the straw. He'll drink out of others, but only if he's desperate. Juice isn't a great habit to start, but it can entice them to want to use the sippy. Motts for Tots has no added sugar.

Just keep offering everything daily. A good trick with my oldest was to seat him at the table with us while we ate, but not give him his own portion. He would watch us eat for a few minutes and then want what we were eating, so we'd feed him off our plates. That, for whatever reason, made him interested in table food.

    HTH :)

  • We have tried Nuby, munckin and playtex...haven't tried the straw ones yet.  She'll sometimes drink water but infrequently.  She just chews on the spout.  I had a friend say once their kid went to whole milk drinking out of a sippy went well but not until then.  I might try the waiting approached on food, that might help. ;)  She just has a bad gag reflux so sometimes she'll gag to the point of throwing up.  Its lovely let me tell ya.
  • Oh man! We've been there and it is just now getting better in the last few weeks. (DS loves to BF and has never had formula.) He used to gag and vomit at any food touching his mouth! Sippy cup--DS likes to drink from an open cup, but we can't always do that. The take n toss cups with a sippy lid and/or straw work well for DS since there is no valve. They drip slowly if it gets turned upsidedown.

About food...DS hated baby food--any kind of purred food. We went right to meltables--whole wheat ritz crackers were a favorite, puffs, cheerios. DS also liked Trader Joe's turkey meatballs (sold frozen.) I figured out that he loves lots of flavor. Then we went back to banana chunks and finally he is eating mushed up banana.  Now he has tried several other fruits as tiny chunks. I keep the water there to wash food down. Somtimes it accumulates in his mouth and he needs a little help.

We talked to an occupational therapist for some ideas. She was a friend, but I know my pediatrician could have given me a referral if I had asked. The first thing she wanted to work on was his gag reflex, and we used a special teether that went far back in his mouth (google P and Q teether). It turned out that his reflex was fine with everything but food. The first food he would not gag on was salty fat pretzels. He loved the salt and it got him used to some different textures in his mouth. Once he was able to break the pretzel up, we stopped feeding it to him because of the choking hazard. The pretzels were our "gateway" food before moving onto the whole wheat ritz. (He was never a fan of the little mesh feeder, but that would have been good, too.)

Sorry this is so long! Hope it helps! :)

  • I read on sweater's blog that babies with swallowing issues respond best to sour foods. Maybe something salty or sour would help her get over the gagging on table foods?
  • We don't have problems with table food, but she just plays with the sippy.  I have daycare offering it to her consistently, and we do this at home as well.

  • I posted a few days ago about my DS not drinking from a sippy cup. He is able to drink from a straw pretty well so I'm not worried about the sippy anymore. As far as table foods, I started with puffs at dinner time on his tray and when he got used to eating at the dinner table I gave him mushy things like mashed potatoes, peas, etc. Then moved onto mac n cheese, green beans, spaghetti. It takes time though, DS does not like much for texture so I kept trying.
