Indiana Babies

Visited the pedi today...

We went just for a shot visit, but I had the nurse weigh him "unofficially".  He is 12lb5oz.  From what I can tell online, that puts him somewhere between 10-25%.  I go back and forth about whether I should be concerned about his weight.  Sometimes I think it's a problem (like today), but mostly I figure he's just tiny b/c T.J. and I were tiny.  He is alert, happy, doesn't cry much, sleeps well, eats on demand, etc... Here are his stats:

At birth: 8lb 2oz (62%)
1month: 9lb 12.5oz (42%)
2month: 11lb 0oz (31%)
3month: 12lb 5oz (? somewhere between 10 and 25% from what I can find online)

What do you guys think?  Is he just a tiny tot, or wasting away?  Is there really anything to do about it bf'ing wise?  We already feed on demand all day and night - he eats at night 2-3 times between midnight and 7am and I don't know how many times during the day.  A lot.

I'm not losing lots of weight either - 4lbs in 6w.  I eat lots of trail mix (almonds, cashew, peanuts, raisins, cranberry), plenty of EVOO, etc...

Re: Visited the pedi today...

  • You know what I'm going to say...rent a scale.  Weigh him before and after feedings and keep a chart for a week.  If he's getting in between four to six ounces on a regular basis, I wouldn't worry.

  • also, I think this is the best weight chart out there

(but it's probably geared for FF babies, not BF'd.)

How did he rank on the WHO charts?

looks like 25% on the WHO (if mean -1.5 = 25%):

  • I'd probably rent a scale and check that out... if he wasn't changing percentiles, I'd say not to worry about it, but since it seems like he's dropping % I would want to know for sure that he's getting enough if I were you.  I'm not sure if that's a big deal for a 3 month old since it's not like you have a lot of history of percentiles to go on, if that makes sense.  I mean it could just be him averaging out to what his growth curve is going to be.

I'm a really bad person to ask though - Jackson was a beast at birth and is still a beast.  The most that ever changed percentile wise for him was he went from the 90th percentile for weight instead of 95th... and he's always stayed in the greater than 97th percentile for height.  The low percentiles just freak me out since I had a totally opposite experience - god help me if one of my kids is small, I'll be a mess.  My perception is totally skewed by my beast child.

  • Beth - there was a lady at my LLL meeting today who was nervous that her baby was too big - she has rolls in her calf!  It's so funny, she's a butterball!

  • I like Kat's suggestion of renting a scale. That really really helped us a lot.

Using the scale and adding up his volumes, we then were able to calculate how many calories per kilogram per day Andrew is getting.  We're told he should hover near 100 calories per kilogram per day, but can take less if he can grow on less than that.  He is growing at a decently steady pace and daily calories vary between 80 and 120 calories per kilogram per day.  Regular straight up breast milk has an average of 20 calories per ounce (it can vary from person to person a bit)

Since the obviously monitor Andrew's weight gain, they've told us the important thing isn't what percentile he is, but what curve he's on.  They've told us if he stays on the growth curve they know he's getting the nutrition he needs, and that if he starts to fall off, then they start to get concerned.

That being said, a bit of a fall-off trend wouldn't be enough to worry and I"m not sure at what point the doctors get concerned.  You never know maybe he'll have a growth spurt and catch right back up, or maybe he's just small.

One of my cousins fell off the growth curve and had every test under the sun, just to discover it was just how he was (a small baby), and now he's over 6 foot tall.

So that doesn't answer your question, but gives some things to think about.  Based on what we've been taught, I'd probably be a little concerned and ask your doctor some questions.  I'd also consider possibilities like reflux for example, which generally causes kids to either undereat or overeat.  You wouldn't want bad reflux to go untreated as it can damage the esophagus.  There are other possible explanations such as low supply on your end or some other BF issue, delayed gastric emptying (I think this is more of a preemie thing), or maybe he's just a small little boy!

  • Don't forget babies and their growth spurts. He could jump up again next week.

I would ask your pedi though to be extra sure. Ours says gaining and keeping a steady curve is good for our kids.
