in my book. granted, I missed the action and I am not 100% sure what was said and all...but that doesn't sit right with me. also admitting to being the person behind said virus is not wise move to me.
I ran this all by my computer-geek DH and he said it's highly unlikely that any viruses were even planted. Hacker Friend probably just said he did it to sound cool. But it's not likely to be true.
He said you CAN very very easily trace an IP addy once you have it, but that getting it would take some serious work and an extreme kind of hacker. You have to get into the web coding of the site itself to gain access to the IP addresses of members who post. Not likely to happen in a few minutes.
I'm sorry, but I'm callin BS on the whole hacker-friend thing.
The horrible b!tch in me wants to say this virus was 100% deserved b/c some heinously deplorable stuff was said.
Hooooooowever the adult in me says that the virus was probably -->.<--- this much over the line.
Just to fill you in: the AE went so far as to start a clicky pole about BW's choice she had to make... Yeah... she went there. And that was just one of many many.
i enjoyed the IP searching, but the virus isn't cool. especially considering that multiple people had access to AE. i get that you can track a specific post, but i just think there is some room for mistakes there. AND it's just bad bad karma.

MrsP, no earthly idea what you said in techie speak, does this sum it up: liar liar pants on fire?
In a nutshell, yes.
The Nest may seem like a nothing place to us, but this is a huge board and a huge moneymaker for the peoples in charge....they have presumably some serious network security. I wouldn't think it would take all of what, half an hour? To get in and do this and get back to NNO.
NNO, if your friend really did do this for you - you've put him at serious risk by talking about it on-board.
Says DH:
and for a hacker to have a trojan go on her pc by her logging into the site would mean he'd have to put it in the code of the actual web page which the webmaster would now see since she admitted it
I am coming in VERY late and it's taken me 45 minutes to catch up as best I can .. and I also don't think any virus was sent BUT if it were - that wouldn't bother me in the least. I just imagine this really nasty person's computer all of a sudden freezing up as weird blotches start appearing all over the screen. Her alarmed face is reflecting the monitor's glow. And then the computer bursts into flames!! OK that last part may be over the top. But it would not bother me if this jerk's computer did get all virused up. (But yeah, it's HIGHLY unlikely that it did.)
Wheee!

Calm down everyone. You didn?t read my OP very well. If someone logs on to that SN again, a virus is possible. (This is not for all AE SN?s, just the AlterEgo one) It?s not definite with all the anti-virus technology we all have out there anyways, but I think he did that to add a ?lesson learned? factor to the horribly mean person behind thisAE.
Since you all seem upset by it, I will call him now and tell him to remove the ?viral popper? as he calls it.
Re: errr. sending viruses to AE's is sketchy
Ding ding ding!
Thank you. At least Steph and I are not the only ones that think this.
Also agreed. But just the suggestion of it is on my list of BSC.
Me neither.?
