Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Think back to 3 weeks old...

Did any of you have a colicky baby?  My Brother and SIL had my nephew 3 weeks ago and the poor thing cries ALL the time.  They have HBOTB, and have tried it all.  I don't know what else to suggest to help.  I am 4 hours away and feel helpless not being there for at least moral support.  Any suggestions on what else they might try for a little rest?

  • Gripe water

    Probiotics

Switch formula (if she's using formula)

    Car rides

Take turns sleeping while one watches the baby

My friends had a baby with colic (we were lucky enough not to) but the only thing that worked for their little one was car rides. One would drive and the other would sleep, then they'd switch drivers.

  • Is she BF'ing? At that age, DS was literally on my boob 24/7. At first I thought it was excessive, then I just went w/ it since it made him happy. Are they swaddling him all the time? Giving him tummy time and rubbing his back, or doing the leg pump thing in case he has gas? That worked for a friend whose baby had tons of gas as a newborn. Also if she is BFing, maybe it is something she is eating that is bothering him? Another thins some ppl do is overdress them. Could he be hot? From the time DS was really really young, he would get too hot if he was overdressed. Sorry if these are no help.

  • white noise? sleep positioner?
  • We had that problem & found out it was the formula & bottles. I planned on breastfeeding so when he decided differently I didn't have anything planned. We used soy formula & Dr Brown's bottles and he turned into a wonderful happy baby.

  • They are BFing.  Not sure about the white noise.  Swaddle doesn't seem to help.  My sister bought them a wrap so I am hoping when I can get down there to teach her how to use it that might help a little.  Car is ok until there is a red light, then he's awake.  He will sleep on my SIL or sometimes in his carseat, so maybe the waterbottle trick would work...it might make him feel safe...

Keep them coming ladies and THANK YOU

  • We thought DD had colic and it turned out it was acid reflux.  We switched to soy formula, got a sleep positioner, burped often during feeding (like every 1/2oz), and kept her upright for about 15 min after eating.  We also had her on Zantac (which I don't think helped any). She was a totally different baby after that and has been happy ever since.
  • White noise - sit in the bathroom with the exhaust fan on or run the vacuum or even a radio set to static

Swaddle - get them a Miracle Blanket. It was the only thing she couldn't break out of

    Gripe water/mylicon/other gas relief

Have baby sleep in swing, bouncy, or whatever they have available

  • If you can't get down there when the wrap does, YouTube had a bunch of videos showing how to do them when I got mine and was lost. Here's my list:

    -Football hold

    - Try putting him down on his tummy (supervised)

-Let him sleep on thier chests

-since they're breastfeeding, try cutting out dairy for a week and see if that helps

Good luck to them. (I think you're helping more than you know. Just knowing that someone is thinking about you can really lift your spirits when you're down.)

  • white noise was a life saver, I would stand by the kitchen sink and turn the water on full blast. It was like magic.
  • Run a hair blow dryer. Youtube has the funniest vidoes of this working with newborns.

My DD loved swaddle with a pacifier and vibrating bouncy seat.  Worked like a charm.

I can't recommend Dr. Karp enough.  You can send a DVD of the 'Happiest Baby on the Block' from Amazon.com directly to your ILs for under $20 bucks -easily.

My darling daughter just turned 4 years old.
  • I have never experienced this but we thought Jett was coliky we started taking him to a chiropractor and it worked like a charm he is SO happy after he is adjusted.. He was out of line after he was born so they should maybe try going to a chiropractor that specializes in Babies.. Best of wishes to them.. the poor things.. but everythin that everyone else has said.. are good things i have heard to try also..
  • oh God I so hope I don't have a colicky baby again!!!!

Swaddling, swing on high speed, gripe water and constant BF were our help.

  • Week 3 was so hard!  We resorted to letting dd sleep in her swing and it was a life saver.  Swaddled tightly, pacifier, a little soft music and the swing.  Good luck!

Sounds like my DS.  Does she know about the 3 week growth spurt?  DS honestly was on my boob 24-7 for a week during that.  It was the only thing that comforted him.

  • Reese had reflux and stomach problems, the best thing was bouncing on those giant excercise balls.  My DH would sit with her in his arms and did it every night for 3 months from 6-9pm, he had abs of steal.  The minute we stopped she would start fussing again.  During the day to get her to nap for a good stretch I would put her on the dryer (while on) in her carseat.  I wasted a lot of energy but at least she slept!!!  It sucks but it ends eventually and then you sort of forget about it....except off course when it's brought up : )  GL to your bro.
  • DD didn't have full on colic but she was the crankiest baby I'd ever met for NOT having it!!

Things that worked for us: vacumming right next to her while she was in the swing. vacuum while she was in the ergo. lay her tummy side down on the boppy and pat her butt (fairly firmly, too) over and over and over. pace the living room for at least 30mins. run the dryer in the bathroom while sitting on the (closed lid) toilet and rock my body back and forth. zantac from 4wks-4mos.

my gawd, *that* was a trip down Rethinking Baby Fevah Memory Lane!!

  • our miracle was taking him into a dark bathroom and turning the bathtub faucet on full blast.  after a few minutes, he would nurse and calm down.  he also loved to be outside, so we often laid on the hammock for naps.  essentially, it was all nursing, all the time.

we also found a "superman" carry that helped - lay the baby facedown across your forearm, so that his face is near your elbow and the palm of your hand is flat against his lower abdomen for support.  your free hand can rub his back.

he had reflux (diagnosed at about 3w) and I ended up eliminating dairy from my diet at week 5 (he was also put on prevacid then).  really helped.  the colic was noticeably better around week 7 (two weeks after eliminating dairy and starting prevacid) and gone around week 13.  we were left with a high-needs, but not colicky, baby :)

ETA: he also really started to enjoy his baths round 3w old, so they became part of the bedtime routine.  the running water calmed him down, the bath was soothing, and then he was able to nurse to sleep.  for naps, we found that putting him on the shoulder and rocking hard (completely front to back in the range of motion of the chair) and relatively quickly helped.

Mommy to Seth (4) and Catherine Anne (13 mo.) Excited to welcome a third child in March of 2013!
