Ear infections? - come in and help a mom from 0-6 month board

LO was so miserable last night with this ear infection.  He would not let me put him down and he didn?t want daddy either.  For the first time, I gave in and let him sleep on me all night.  But, even sleeping on me he would wake up every half hour and cry/scream.  I gave him his first dosage of antibiotic last night at 7pm and then again this morning at 7am, what are the chances he?ll be feeling better tonight??  Is there any thing else I can do to make him feel better?  Also, he obviously stopped STTN because of this ? will he go back to STTN once this infection clears up?

  • My DS is on day 3 of his antibiotics for ear infection. The past 2 days were HORRIBLE. He was so not himself. I think I held him all day long. He would cry whenever I tried to put him down. He would wake up and scream during his naps and at night as well. This morning was rough, but then he started diarrheaing constantly and he seems much better now. I'm hoping the antibiotics are starting to clear up the infection.

I did read the side effects of antibiotics and it said stomach pains and diarrhea so maybe your DS is in discomfort too? Hopefully by day 3 he'll be feeling better.

Oh, and you are a brat for having a 3 month old who STTN!!!!  =)  My 9 month old still wakes up once. Ugh!!!

  • We have had multiple ear infections.  Give him Tylenol to help with the pain.  Probably won't make it go away but may help a lot.  I hear that Motrin works better but I don't think you can give it until 6 months.  Our DS went back to STTN but we had to "retrain" him - not fun but when he is sick we go to him for any cry and he gets used to that attention.
  • My DS started his first round of antibiotics last night for his ear infection too.  From my ear infection experience w/ DD and the last one w/ DS, they start to feel better 24-48 hrs after they start meds. I can't speak on the STTN though b/c DS isn't yet...I can't remember w/ DD.
  • After 24 hours of antibiotics, they often feel better. You can elevate the crib to help relieve the pressure, this is probably what wakes him up. Did you try Motrin or Tylenol at bedtime? Did the doctor give you any numbing drops? If not, the OTC ones can help. Sleeping through the night I can't answer because we have almost constant ear infections. Hope he feels better soon.
  • DD normally seemed to feel better after 2 doses of the antibiotic.  She has tubes now so they aren't as frequent.  I could normally tell when she had an ear infection because she wouldn't sleep well.  However, she went right back to STTN when the infection was better.  Hugs to you and your little one.  They are no fun!

This exactly.  Also, laying flat can cause fluid to pool in the ear causing pain.  We propped up DD for overnight sleeping during the early days of her most recent ear infection (she's still on antibiotics for them).  She's back to STTN now that she's feeling a bit better.
