I just got a ticket

because my husband was working on my car in front of our house on the street. I had to go cry in a corner.  Its bad enough that we have to spend over 400 on parts and dh has to work for days to fix it because we can't afford to take it to a shop. Seriously, I didnt know it was illegal, why couldnt they have given a warning.

The worst part is its going to be 4 days till the parts are here and they can ticket every day.

Re: I just got a ticket

  • :(  Any chance your DH can move the car into the driveway?  Sorry... :(

  • That's the craziest thing I've heard all day.  Sorry to hear that.  In my area they're handing out tickets for every little thing I think to generate money.

  • Our driveway is a 45 degree tilt, not safe for jack stands.
  • Can you move the car into the driveway when he's not working on it?

even if he is there working on it they will ticket..
  • tarp it.  And notify the local PD that you have disabled vehicle that you will move in 4 days when the apprpriate part arrives.  And look for a community garage for him to do the work in.  If it's against the law to work on your car at home, then there has to be available facilities for personnal vehicle maintinance.

Most PDs will give you a break if you call and tell them that a vehicle is disabled and can't be moved for a few days.  If you can give a move date, they are especially lienient.  In fact, if you call and tell them what's going on, the may be able to null the ticket.

It never hurts to call and ask.

Yes, but perhaps this will lessen the chance of the ticket (i.e. one hour on the street vs 24 hours means 23 hours less time that the police will drive by when the car is out)

I called and explained how I had no idea but parts are on the way, where are we supposed to work on it. He said driveway or the promote taking it to a shop and have it fixed by professionals. Well our driveway is to steep to be safe and we had it done by professionals at sears that ruined my brakes to the point that we are having to replace everything they did and more from the damage. After talking to the BBB and pp at sears they basically said your up sh*t creek, good bye. I asked the man how I was to pay for it with my husband laid off, and just trying to make our car safe for our 2 kids.

" oh you have an answer for everything dont you" Umm, well dumbass I think of these things before hand. If the shop did it right then we wouldnt be here. Jerkface.

I even asked about warnings since I had never heard of the law before.

"NO, I can;t give you a break or anyone a break, Just because the list of laws is the size of an encylopedia you still have to obey them"

I love cops, have chp in the family and used to work in law enforment. But that guy was just nasty and rude.

  • I am so so sorry.  I missed this post earlier.  That is the dumbest thing I've ever heard.
