Everything I've read lately says NOT to heat breast milk up, but to "serve" it room temperature...however I received a First Years bottle warmer that says "safer for breast milk." What's the deal?
Also, my Dr. Browns bottles say not to warm in the microwave (for formula), so should I just stick with the bottle warmer for that or do you have to do the method where you simmer water in a pan on the stove and put the bottle in there?
Thank you in advance!
Re: Heating breast milk a no-no?
you just can't microwave it. Bottle warmers or using the stove is just fine?
I have put Dr Browns and others in the microwave for formula...?

just use a cup of warm tap water and put the bottle in there.
You don't want to overheat either, but I do heat BM for my DS. However, if you CAN get them to drink it cold even better, since then they can take bottles anywhere at any temp
My pediatrician told me there is no need to warm a bottle of any kind...breast milk or formula..they can take it cold...just like us grown ups drink cold milk. She said once they have 1 warm bottle...you'll have to warm every bottle after that, but if you only give them cold, they won't know the difference.
I work at a daycare and they keep a crockpot full of water on tlow hroughout the day and warm up bottles that way.
That's what I am planning on doing while I am at home instead of buying a bottle warmer.
You can heat formula in the microwave... you just can't be stupid about it like putting a bottle in for minutes at a time.
To give you an idea, I heat 4 oz bottles (I only do water though before I mix it but I have microwaved formula from the fridge) for 20 seconds and that doesn't get it close to burning anyone. Just warms it up?
No, you can heat them up, you just don't want them HOT. And you don't want to use a microwave.
You can heat it up with a bottle warmer or just under hot tap water.
You can warm breastmilk. If I needed to bottle feed vs nurse, would just heat some water in a bowl/mug/pan (until i got a bottle warmer) until it was hot and then take it off the heat (stove or microwave) and set a bottle in the warm water checking it regulary until it came to the temp that I liked (via touch).
You are not supposed to microwave BM or formula because it can cause hot spots in the milk and burn baby's mouth....even if you swirl it around to mix it.
