Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Stop the press. There is a dead horse needing a beating.

I don't have girls so I am oblivious.  You have to insert your finger to check a hymen?  Why are the girls on 6-12 saying that?

ETA - Wouldn't inserting the finger actually break the hymen?

Also, am I a child abuser if I have to pull back my son's foreskin to give a good cleaning?

  • LMAO!  I have no idea bout the hymen check but no , you are not a child abuser!

  • No, and I have a almost 3 yo. I never thought about doing that and dont plan on ever doing that. Just doesnt seem appropriate.
  • this is what i thought when this stuff was first posted last week or so.  i always thought that it wasn internal...something you couldn't see or check from the outside.

  • No, you do not. The hymen is external. Those women are obviously not very edumacated.

  • You don't insert a finger, you spread the labia and you can see. The pedi does it at every appt., and I don't think it is wrong to check for yourself. I am sure that if you or someone close to you was a survivor of childhood sexual abuse that went on for years, you would check too after getting your child back from any babysitter/daycare/whatever.

I just realized this post sounds angry, and it is not directed at you AW. It is more for the people who would say someone is abusing their child, when they are only making sure their child is ok.

I said it was inappropriate when I thought you were actually puttiner your finger inside.  Im not very ggod with anatomy so I have no idea where this even is or what to look for.

  • why would they even need to check it?
  • Health and safety reasons. A girls hymen can close up, requiring steroid cream or even surgery in severe cases. And also, like I said, to check for sexual abuse. I said 2 replies above this one that it can go unchecked for years, without anyone knowing about it. I think you can never be too cautious, especially if you leave your child with anyone besides yourself, i.e. Daycare, babysitters, or even your own family. I'm not saying check every day, but I do think a good parent knows what is going on with their child's body.
