DH and I are broke, but I really want to plant a garden, so I am thinking of growing plants from seeds (In pots).  I know that means they won't be ready to put in the ground this year, but I am ok with one more summer with a bare looking yard.  Any suggestions on things that grow well from seed?  Also, would you recommend planting tomatoes on the side of your house (in a non-fenced area)?

Re: New project
I do too, that is why starting from seed sounds appealing. At least if it dies, it didn't cost me much.
i like mint! lol- no help.
umm- tomotoes grow really well from those hangy things that they've been selling- they also grow great in pots against the side of your house (per my mil) just make sure they've got plenty of support.
ummm- other potted food plants.....beans maybe? don't most things grow best inthe ground? i'm sorry- i avoid gardening because weeding makes me grouchy.
look at the birds | bless this food

Oh it doesn't have to be a food plant. I just know DH would love to have homegrown tomatoes. I am going to try my hand at some basil and parsley again too (I killed a few of those already).
And I thought that when you started from seeds, it was best to keep them potted until they were mature enough to put in the ground? no?

Ditto. When we moved into our house the backyard was full of nice flowers and plants. I never remember to water them and the sprinklers don't seem to be enough so a lot of them have died. I feel so bad.

and i have no advice, but good luck with your garden!
We've had good luck in pots (big ones!) with:
Tomatoes: "regular" and grape
Red Peppers
Jalapenos
Lettuce
Various herbs
Cucumbers - but need a LARGE pot and don't put too many in - they need space
I've done radishes and summer squash in pots, but didn't have the best luck, but that may not be the reason.
I've done most from seedlings and seeds and both have turned out. Good luck!

Do they have to be Styrofoam egg cartons or will plastic ones work?
Either one. I like the pressed paper ones too because you can cut between with scissors and just put the whole thing in the pot. If you use styrofoam you can poke a little hole in the bottom with a toothpick for drainage. I'm not sure what plastic egg containers look like but I imagine you could use a kebab skewer or the like to poke a hole for drainage.
The other great perk of these little containers to start with is that you can keep all your like-seedlings together and labeled. They all look alike to my untrained eyes at the start.
Another cool thing is that you can use plastic trays to move the groups of seedlings around for sun exposure and watering.
Good grief, could I post more in your post??
You mentioned that you're broke? What a great thing to do - plant a garden. I think you still have time to get a harvest in!
I remember gardening with my mom and grandma when I was little. Those are some of my happiest childhood memories. It'll be great for your family
