New project

DH and I are broke, but I really want to plant a garden, so I am thinking of growing plants from seeds (In pots).  I know that means they won't be ready to put in the ground this year, but I am ok with one more summer with a bare looking yard.  Any suggestions on things that grow well from seed?  Also, would you recommend planting tomatoes on the side of your house (in a non-fenced area)?

I do too, that is why starting from seed sounds appealing.  At least if it dies, it didn't cost me much.

i like mint! lol- no help.

umm- tomotoes grow really well from those hangy things that they've been selling- they also grow great in pots against the side of your house (per my mil) just make sure they've got plenty of support.

ummm- other potted food plants.....beans maybe? don't most things grow best inthe ground? i'm sorry- i avoid gardening because weeding makes me grouchy.

Oh it doesn't have to be a food plant.  I just know DH would love to have homegrown tomatoes.  I am going to try my hand at some basil and parsley again too (I killed a few of those already).

And I thought that when you started from seeds, it was best to keep them potted until they were mature enough to put in the ground?  no?

  • An herb garden would be cool.
  • when dh and i moved into our house, my mil gave me this really nice, big herb pot, that had all these little indentations that had different herbs growing out of it: thyme, rosemary, sage, parsley, etc.  i tried so hard but it was dead in a month.  i was so embarrassed i made dh hide it behind the shed when they came over.

Yeah, you need to start them in pots if your going from seeds. I usually just buy plants from HD/Lowes so I don't know what grows well from seeds, but maybe do some research on what grows naturally in your area. That way when you do move it to the ground it will require less maintenance.

Ditto.  When we moved into our house the backyard was full of nice flowers and plants.  I never remember to water them and the sprinklers don't seem to be enough so a lot of them have died.  I feel so bad.  :(

  • We've had good luck in pots (big ones!) with:

    Tomatoes:  "regular" and grape
    Red Peppers
    Jalapenos
    Lettuce
    Various herbs
Cucumbers - but need a LARGE pot and don't put too many in - they need space

I've done radishes and summer squash in pots, but didn't have the best luck, but that may not be the reason.

I've done most from seedlings and seeds and both have turned out.  Good luck!

  • Herbs are pretty easy.  Also, I planted a bunch of flower seeds in my yard way late, maybe two weekends ago, and they are coming up fine.  Depending where you live and the kind of seed, they can germinate outside well into the summer.  Try marigolds, easiest plant ever.

  • Little egg containers are a good way to start out the tiny seedlings - you can transfer up to larger pots as needed. You may have more seedlings than you can actually plant in the space by your house.

Do they have to be Styrofoam egg cartons or will plastic ones work?

  • Either one. I like the pressed paper ones too because you can cut between with scissors and just put the whole thing in the pot. If you use styrofoam you can poke a little hole in the bottom with a toothpick for drainage. I'm not sure what plastic egg containers look like but I imagine you could use a kebab skewer or the like to poke a hole for drainage.

The other great perk of these little containers to start with is that you can keep all your like-seedlings together and labeled. They all look alike to my untrained eyes at the start.

Another cool thing is that you can use plastic trays to move the groups of seedlings around for sun exposure and watering.

  • Good grief, could I post more in your post??

You mentioned that you're broke? What a great thing to do - plant a garden. I think you still have time to get a harvest in!

I remember gardening with my mom and grandma when I was little. Those are some of my happiest childhood memories. It'll be great for your family :)

  • Yeah, we are pretty broke.  Otherwise I would hire landscapers to come out and do the whole thing.  We need so much lawn work to be done.
