3rd Trimester

Kinda irritated with pharmacy or maybe the dr's office

My insurance requires "prior authorization" on expensive meds.  I was supposed to start heprin injections on sunday and still haven't received my shipment... so I called the pharmacy today and they said they are STILL waiting on the authorization.  So I have known for about 3 months I would be switched to heprin at 35 weeks, the Dr gave the nurse that calls in my perscriptions the script 2 weeks ago while I was there and she said she would call it in that day... and I reminded them of how my insurance was about the first shot so they knew it would take at least a day to process...

Who dropped the ball on this one... but it is kinda pissing me off...

  • I used to be a manager for a drug store, and have had to work in the pharmacy from time to time.  I have personally had to call doctors quite frequently to get prescriptions filled/refilled. And I mean many, many calls for one silly prescription. Refills are a lot easier than new ones.  It sounds more like your insurance is causing the hold-up though, if they told you they were waiting on authorization. It could just be that this drug is even more of a pain to get on your insurance. But if you didn't physically bring in the script, I am not surprised by the delay. The pharmacy has to have the actual script order to fill, and that is what we end up calling doctors for most times. They do seem to forget to fax them in quite frequently, and if there was an error or or unclear info, it has to be clarified before they can proceed. It is also possible the nurse may have waited to call it in, thinking you had plenty of time. If you can afford it, they should be able to give it to you if the script is in order, but you'd have to pay cash, and they can later refund you the difference when the insurance approves it. I've seen it done many times. What drug store are you using? My husband is still in the business and maybe I can ask him for any solutions??
