How old was your kids when you first left them over night with someone?

And how old when you left them for a week?

Re: question for anyone who has kids already

  • DS stayed with my Mom overnight at 5? months old. We went away for 5 days and left him with my IL's at 8 months and for 5 days at 10 months with my Mom. He did fine both times :)

  • I heard a report on this on NPR the other day.  I think if you search "Worst Mom in America" or something it will come up with this lady's story who let her 11 year old take the subway home by himself one time as both a test for the kid and also a test for the parents.  It worked out fine, but she provides some interesting perspective on leaving kids alone to basically prove they can do it.  Also, you may get some good feedback on the parenting boards.  GL =)

    ETA: I misread this post...disregard.  ><

  • My youngest was 2 when I left all the kids at grandma's for the night...

My youngest was 9 when I left the for a week (with their dad, my ex) so I could go on a vacation to Vegas.

  • I don't have children yet, but I know that our plan is to leave the baby with my mom for a weekend in mid-June of next year. The baby will be 6 months at that point. My mom is the only person I would leave the baby with for more than a night or a few hours until the baby is at least a year old.

  • 4 months old, he stayed with my MIL and FIL.

Never had him stay more than overnight away from us so far, but DH and I are going to Indianapolis for three days in Sept.

  • We had an out of town wedding when DS was about 5 months old, and that was 2 nights.  We were about 4 hours from home and he stayed with MIL and FIL.  I cried my eyes out, but DS did very well.  We've never left him for a week though, I think 2 nights has been the most.  He's 3 now.
  • DS was about 10 months old when he spent the night away from us (with my ILs). I had this thing- I wanted him to be consistently sleeping through the night before I let someone else keep him overnight. I didn't want anyone burdened with waking up to feed him! So, that took until 10 months. The first chance we had for a weekend getaway after that, we took it!

Since then, he's spent several weekends with them. They are local.

DS is 3 and JUST now preparing for his first week away with my OOT parents. Aaahhh!!

  • my ds is 19 months and I haven't left him yet.
  • Overnight- 8 months.

I've never left DD for more than one night, but mostly because she has a medical condition and other's really can't take care of her for more than 24-36 hours.  Even so, I'm not sure I'd have left her for a week yet.  She'll be two in July.

oh, and both times we went away, my IL's and my Mom flew down to my house and stayed with him in his own house. He was great...I cried every single day I was away from him.  It was not easy!

  • DS stayed with his grandparents for two nights when he was a little over 2.

  • I had my first night away from my son at 11/2mo. old but he was with DH.. and we have never spent a week away from him... that would be really hard!

  • DD was a horrible sleeper so we didn't leave her with anyone overnight until 10 months. Even then, it was with my parents and just one night for our anniversary. At 9 months she was still up every 2 hours and she finally started sleeping through the night at 14.5 months, so I just couldn't do that to anyone... not to mention the separation anxiety, etc..

Anyway, so all we've ever left her at this point (16 months) is 1 night. We plan on taking a short weekend vacation soon though, she'd be more then fine at this point but we've just had so much going on that we haven't done it yet. A week seems like way too long right now, but I do have a friend who left her 13m.o. with her parents for a week cruise.. she said it was too long though.

  • We left Jack with my mil for five days when he was five months old to go diving in Cozumel, Mexico. I was flamed up one side and down another on the parenting board for it. It is much easier to leave a little baby than it is to leave a toddler.
  • i never had either of my kids stay overnight with anyone until they were atleast 1. i have never had them stay away for a week. i think i would cry. :(

I am pretty sure it was 5 wk they both went to my parents for a night.

  • I left DD with my dad overnight at 6mo - but it was literally 10 hours. I had trouble enjoing myself and spent a fair amount of that time either pumping or crying.

We didn't leave her overnight again until she was about 20mo, again with my dad. But she loves her pop-pop and is thrilled to go over there and is vocal enough to tell me that so I have no feelings of guilt/anxiety about leaving her there. She has spent a weekend there for our anniversary. I have never left her for a week and honestly can't imagine doing that any time soon.

  • In January...DD was a little over 2 and DS a little over 1.  That's the only time we've left them, but I'd like to for a couple nights this summer and take a weekend for just me and DH.

  • Haven't done either yet.  We don't live in the same town as our parents so there hasn't been a need.  However, there is a chance my 1yr old may be staying with his grandparents at some point next month or in August.

  • Honestly, I had planned on leaving DD#1 a LOT earlier, but she was such a difficult baby I didn't want to saddle anyone with her at night.  So I don't think I left her overnight until she was probably 18mos or so.  When DD#2 was about 15mos old, we left them both for 5 days with my parents to go on vacation, and I think that was the first time for her.  So DD#1 was about 4 when we did that.
  • 10 months havent gone for a vacation yet so only overnight. ?DH is more concerned than I am. ?So we are yet to leave her for a week, but everyone is different. ?Also depends if you are bfing etc.

  • How old was your kids when you first left them over night with someone? I think DD was about 11 months when we tried to do an over night at my parents house - didn't work out - my mom brought her home at 1 in the am.  The major problem is she doesn't sleep well when she isn't in her crib.  We haven't tried it again but may over the summer.  I asked my mom to stay at our house when we have #2, DD will do much better there.

And how old when you left them for a week? haven't yet.

  • I have not yet... no real reason that we have had to go out of town and I have not had the desire to just have a night without him. He sleeps through the night so I get plenty of rest... I guess when DD is born he may have to stay with someone...
