Anyone deliver/going to deliver at the Birth Center in Bryn Mawr

Went to their orientation last week. Would love to hear your stories and experiences.  We are leaning towards them.

Thanks in advance

Re: Anyone deliver/going to deliver at the Birth Center in Bryn Mawr

  • I am way too interested in epidurals and comforted by the beeping machines and sterile environment of western medicine so the birth center is not for me. However, I have heard great things about it and my coworker's wife delivered there and had a wonderful experience. Sorry I cant be more help, but from what Ive heard, if you are the type of person that really likes the idea of a home birth / midwife / "natural" experience, Bryn Mawr Birth Center is an excellent choice.

  • I won't be birthing there myself, but the teacher of my Bradley Method childbirth class had all 3 of her children there, and she speaks of the Birth Center in glowing terms. :)
  • I'm going to the Birth Center to have my baby in October!

It impressed me that they approach birth as a natural process that I will work through rather than a medical problem that needs someone to "deliver" my baby for me. I also didn't realize at first that in a Hospital, you are inevitably separated from your baby, whereas at TBC, you'll always be at least in the same room. I love the fact that they'll only let you give birth there if you're in good health-- not too early, not too late, no high bp, no high bmi-- they want to ensure a healthy experience for you and baby so if there are any risks, it's off to the hospital (and one of the midwives will go with you.) I don't like that this lets my "plan" depend on my body's cooperation (I'm a big planner) but, I know this part is for my own good.

If you're curious about the appeal of a natural birth, I'd recommend reading Active Birth: The New Approach to Giving Birth Naturally by Janey Balaskas.

And let me know if you want to chat more about it.

  • One more thing-- I never thought of myself as the "Home Birth-Type." Sounds too risky to me, what if something goes wrong?? With The Birth Center, you're right across the street from a great hospital, with an ICU if there's an emergency.

  • My family has had 5 babies there - we LOVE the birth center!  The last two deliveries I attended, we were the only families present, so we had the waiting room (and midwife and nurses) to ourselves - it was such a pleasure. I've enjoyed my prenatal care, and feel like the midwives & nurses are very accomodating.

  • Thank you to those who responded.

We had our first appointment today and I will say this, it was like night and day compared to my past 4 hospital appointments.

We are in it to win it. November yes!
