Pregnant after 35

Twice weekly NSTs & baby is small

I had my weekly OB appt. and the dr. did an u/s to see the weight. The baby is measuring small (under 6 lbs) and there is very little amnio fluid. The NST was fine and I will have another on Friday. The dr. said worst case he induces but that is not an option until next week as long as the NST on Friday is fine.

I am trying to mentally prepare for the idea that I could have the baby next week but also prepare that I could go all the way and past my due date.

Anyone else measure small or have low fluid?

Re: Twice weekly NSTs & baby is small

  • I have never measured small with any of my pregnancies, but I have learned that just because you measure big doesn't mean they can give you precise weights.  Seems to reason that the same would apply for measuring small.  It seems like the low fluid is really the more significant issue.  I would try not to worry since the first NST came back fine, you have another in a few days, and at that point you're well past any early delivery risk time frames.  Easy for me to say, right?  Hang in there!

With my 2nd my doctor told me I was measuring small - that my baby would not be over 5 lbs full term.  This was at 33 weeks.  I went in for a measurement u/s (which still could be off by a lb either way) & everything looked normal.. ug, but one of my doctors (I have 3) was still convinced & that if there was no change he would deliver the baby early.  I was still measuring 2 weeks behind.

When my son was born he was 2 weeks early (decided to come on his own) & weighed 6 lbs 14 ounces. I was then afraid if he stayed in there for another 2 weeks... I had a tough time pushing out my 7 lb 3 ouncer with my first ; )

Honestly, I would try not to worry.  After next week if they decide to induce it will be the best for the little one & you will be 38 weeks anyway!

My step-sister in-law had her small baby at 37 weeks because of low amniotic fluid, and her baby girl is healthy, beautiful and has more than caught up weight wise.
  • My 2nd baby starting measuring small with low amniotic fluid around 18 weeks.  I delivered her at 36 weeks due to very low fluid (around 5/6).  The OB and peri. decided she'd do better on the "outside."  She ended up being bigger than they thought (5 1/2 lbs) and didn't have any issues.  I was very thankful for the NST's and ultrasounds.  Good luck.
