Spinal Block v. Epidural?

I'm having a c-section on Thursday afternoon and I just found out that I'll be having a spinal. I really don't know much about this form of anethesia and how it differs from an epidural. From what my doc said, epi's are meant more for an extended period whereas spinals wear-off more quickly.  My real question is, does one hurt more than the other? Anyone have experience with a spinal v. epi?

Re: Spinal Block v. Epidural?

  • In my experience, the spinal hurt much, much less going in then the epi.

  • Spinal is a one-time shot and the epidural stays in you.

  • I have never had a spinal, but I wouldn't imagine it hurting more than an epi. I would assume they would use the same sort of needle. They just wouldn't put a catheter in for continual medication. I would think it would be a bit easier.

  • Everyone I know who had a scheduled c-section had a spinal instead of an epidural.

Since an epidural can sometimes not work, I would think a spinal would be a better option!

However, one of the benefits of an epidural is that it doesn't actually go into your spinal column, so there's no chance of damaging it (ie, paralysis).  I imagine (from it's name), that that's not the case with a spinal.

  • Take the spinal!!!!!

They tried to do my c-section with an epi and I felt EVERYTHING!  THey had to put me under after they got her out because of it.  I labored before my c-section, so thats why I didn't have a spinal done in the first place.  I konw some people have had good experiences with an epi and a c-section, but mine was horendous!  GL!

  • I have also being reading about it because I am scheduled to have a c/s on Sunday.  I was concerned about being gruggy and a nurse I talked to at the hospital told me that the spinal is a better option.  I had an epi with DS and I was ok but I wish I was more alert.  The epi did not hurt at all so I hope the spinal is the same way.
